Canine leptospirosis infections – clinical signs and outcome with different suspectedLeptospiraserogroups (42 cases)

Abstract: Most of the dogs with leptospirosis in southern Germany had sera reacting to serogroups other than icterohaemorrhagiae and canicola, which are contained in the vaccine. Thus, currently available vaccines in Europe do not protect against the most common Leptospira organisms associated with clinical disease.

“…This value is similar to that described in Italy 19 and Thailand 28 ; however, it is much less than that reported in Germany, 29 Mexico, 30 and the United States. 31 No particular serovar was predominant in our study, although other reports have claimed a more frequent distribution of serovars Grippotyphosa, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Australis, and Canicola.…”

[28][29][30][31][32] Such discrepancies may be because of the relatively limited number of animals used or differences in climatic or geographical conditions.…”

“…In our study, Leptospira serovars that had the highest reactivity (i.e., titer) were considered to be the possible infecting serovar. 45,46 However, we cannot determine if this finding is caused by past or current infections because we only had single serum samples. Furthermore, cross-reactions, especially between serogroups, are often observed in the MAT.…”

“…Because our study involves isolation of leptospires from rats, we could only collect single, not paired, samples. Therefore, in this study, the serovar with the highest titer was considered to be the presumptive infecting serovar 45,46 and serum with this result was classified as being infected with single Leptospira serovar. However, if two or more serovars induced the highest titer, then the infection was considered to be probably caused by multiple serovars.…”

“…Grippotyphosa was also reported as one of the most common causes of clinical leptospirosis in humans and dogs in Germany (6,11,12). Serovar Grippotyphosa is maintained by a number of small rodents in Europe: the common vole (Microtus arvalis) (4,10,14), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) (7), common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) (16), wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), and yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) (19,21).…”
