Building Configuration of Low-Cost Apartments in Bandung—Its Contribution to the Microclimate and Outdoor Thermal Comfort

Abstract: This paper aims to find the microclimate aspect within the building form and configuration of five low-cost apartments (henceforth rusun) in Bandung, Indonesia. There are parallel, square, and interspersed plots investigated with specific discussion on the microclimate aspects that gain human perception of outdoor thermal comfort. The microclimate prognostic model, i.e., ENVI-met, was used to determine the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt), which was then used to describe the living quality of outdoor thermal co… Show more

“…Additionally, scholars continue to put forward new research methods based on software simulation [37]. In recent years, the ENVI-met simulation method for urban microclimate environments with different climate characteristics has been frequently applied in academic research [33,38,39]. Deep exploration of the mechanism of urban climate change is the key to urban environment improvement and related policy development.…”

“…However, very few studies focused on building scale that considers the impact of building form, including shape, height, orientation and location of the target building, etc., on the microclimate of its outdoor space in detail. Anisha et al [10] and Beta et al [11] investigated effects of building forms on microclimate, but they just considered a few simple and fundamental forms. To fully explore the effect of building forms on outdoor thermal comfort, a series of design scenarios for various building forms should be considered.…”

“…He et al studied the relationship between urban heat island (UHI) and the ongoing sponge city (SPC) project in China (He et al, 2019). Paramita et al used ENVI-met to simulate the outdoor Mean Radiation Temperature (Tmrt) and Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) to explore the outdoor thermal comfort surrounding low-rent housing in different layouts in Indonesia, finding that parallel plots of land with buildings facing north and south are the most favorable building forms and configurations (Paramita et al, 2018). Xu et al took a plateau village (3,500 m above sea level) next to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway as a case and selected four typical courtyard layouts and outdoor reference points in the village to assess Tmrt and PET through field measurements.…”
