In 2019, the World Meteorological Organization published its “Guidance on Integrated Urban Hydrometeorological, Climate and Environment Services (Volume I: Concept and Methodology)” to assist WMO Members in developing and implementing the urban services that address the needs of city stakeholders in their countries. The guidance has relevant implications for not only protecting infrastructures from the impacts of climate change in the urban environment, but its proper declination strongly supports health-related policies to protect the population from direct and indirect impacts. Utilizing some principles of the guidance, the urbanized area of Bologna (Italy) was analyzed in order to furnish the municipality with tools coherent with the best practices actually emerging from the international bibliography to protect the citizens’ health of this city. Specifically, the analysis concentrated on the public spaces and the potential vulnerabilities of the fragile population to high-temperature regimes in the city. Utilizing the guidance as a methodological framework, the authors developed a methodology to define the microclimate vulnerabilities of the city and specific cards to assist the policymakers in city regeneration. Because the medieval structure of the city does not allow the application of a wide set of nature-based solutions, our main attention was placed on the possibility of furnishing the city with a great number of pocket parks obtainable from spaces actually dedicated to parking lots, thus introducing new green infrastructures in a highly deprived area in order to assure safety spaces for the fragile population.

Green areas of university campuses are an important resource for them, performing a variety of functions important for the functioning of the university, the well-being of the academic community, the environment and the green system of the city. The purpose of this study was to determine the preferences of the academic community, with particular emphasis on students, as to the functionality that campus green spaces should fulfil today. The methodology of the research work included a diagnostic survey method, the technique of which was surveying, and the tool was a survey questionnaire. Analysis of the results of a survey conducted among students at the Bialystok University of Technology (Bialystok, Poland) made it possible to determine the needs and expectations regarding the development of campus green areas. The concept of pocket gardens accommodates responses and solutions to students' expectations. The analysis of the student community's opinions served to implement the tasks of the "My Green Polytechnic" strategy conducted on the Bialystok University of Technology campus. The results of the survey and the experience of its implementation can be useful to various institutions in making decisions on green space management.

The rapid urbanization and climate change have resulted in socio-environmental issues that necessitate viable intervention strategies to create green, healthy, and livable built environments. One effective method is the development of pocket parks. Although several studies have explored the benefits and design principles of pocket parks, there is a lack of systematic and quantitative understanding. In view of this knowledge gap, this study employs bibliometric methods and critical review to quantitatively analyze and systematically review 276 papers published in the Web of Science and Scopus databases between 1977 and 2023. Firstly, a bibliometric analysis is conducted, providing a comprehensive overview of research on pocket parks. Secondly, a detailed critical review is conducted from three major perspectives: influencing factors, design methods, and benefits of pocket parks. Finally, the research trends and future directions are discussed. The results indicate that (a) pocket park development takes various forms, with a growing number of articles published each year. However, research on this topic is primarily concentrated in the United States and China, with significant knowledge gaps remaining globally. (b) The utilization of pocket parks is affected by various factors, including internal, external physical, and socio-economic factors. The mechanisms of these factors and their interactions demand deeper understanding. (c) There is a need to conduct an in-depth exploration of planning methods for pocket parks, and planning and design methods in different country contexts can be expanded and compared. (d) Further research is needed to compare the benefits of pocket parks in different climatic zones in terms of depth and width. The outcome of this study can contribute to the body of knowledge on pocket parks, foster their wider acceptance, and help urban planners, practitioners, policy makers, and government managers apply them more effectively in resilient and livable cities of the future.
