-(Bryoflora (Bryophyta and Marchantiophyta) of Combu Island, Belém, Pará State, Brazil). There are a few studies on bryophytes from Brazilian Islands. Most of these studies are concentrated in the States of São Paulo and Pará. From the latter state, the Islands of Marajó, Germoplasma (in the Tucuruí dam reservoir), Algodoal-Maiandeua, and Trambioca were previously. However, considering the insular region of Belém municipality by itself, there are 39 Islands, including Combu Island, which is under environmental protection. It is formed essentially by várzea forest, one of the main types of floodplain Amazonian forests. The aim of this study was to investigate the bryoflora of Combu Island, Belém, Pará State, through species richness and record numbers of mosses and liverworts, by supplying data about the ecology and geographic distribution of the species in Brazil, besides the morphological and taxonomical comments, when necessary. The collections were carried out in 17 plots of 10 × 10 m, being nine in high várzea and eight in low várzea. In total, 72 species were identified (27 mosses and 45 liverworts). Lejeuneaceae was the most representative family with 41 species. Higher species richness and record number ware observed in high várzea.

Bryophyte communities of restingas in Northeastern Brazil and their similarity to those of other restingas in the country

Restingas are a coastal component of the Atlantic Forest. Th ey experience high temperatures and possess soils with a low capacity to retain water, low nutrient content and high salt concentrations. Studies on bryophytes of restingas have been mostly conducted in Southeastern Brazil, and so we aimed to characterize the bryophyte fl ora of seven areas of restinga in the Northeastern Region and to establish their fl oristic affi nities with other restingas in Brazil. Fifty-fi ve species were found in the studied restingas, the vast majority of which are generalist species with life forms of intermediate tolerance to desiccation and of corticicolous and terrestrial habitat. Th e number of species per area is low compared to the species richness of other restingas in Brazil. A cluster analysis, although based on low similarity, showed that the bryofl ora from the surveyed areas is distinct from those of restingas from Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, which all form a group, and those of the coast of São Paulo, which also comprised a cluster. Th e heterogeneous climate, soils and vegetation structure of the studied restingas, in comparison those of the Southeast, act as selective fi lters for the species, thereby contributing to the distinction observed in those communities.

Islands are simplified and isolated ecosystems that have been used to study ecological and evolutionary process. An important study site is the The Alcatrazes Archipelago; its main island is forested and occupied by marine birds and endemic species of terrestrial vertebrates. Records of specie richness are useful to assess the degree of habitat isolation and resilience, both relevant to practical of conservation. The pioneering registers of Lüderwaldt and Fonseca in 1923 cited seven species of butterflies. We found only three of them and found eight and two new occurrences during 1993- 1994 and 2011 expeditions, respectively. Alcatrazes island has only 18 species of butterflies known against 538 species of continental coastline. This low richness is derived from hard physical conditions of island, hindering the colonization. The Alcatrazes butterflies have good power of flight dispersal and feed on plants of secondary vegetation near-coastal habitats; its populations and community changed in short time space.
