To control the transmission of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Brazilian local governments have adopted partial lockdown measures in economic sectors, thereby triggering transmission shocks along input-output supply chains. The national internal market and territorial disparities favor the formation of subnational production networks within borders, thus increasing the potential effects of lockdown measures on regional integration production networks. Therefore, this study makes hypothetical simulations of COVID-19 mitigation policy decisions to understand the regional impacts on integration in supply chains, considering both domestic and global value chains. The generalized hypothetical extraction method is applied to a Brazilian interregional input-output model with 68 industries and 27 regions, imputing partial removals on intermediate consumption and final demand. The results suggest that richer subnational areas, mainly São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, are proportionally more impacted by COVID-19 trade shocks. However, the poorer peripheries are doubly affected, either by the foreign shock, which would damage their economic structure, or by the retraction of the subnational demand from core states. The findings highlight that economic shocks are spatially distributed through different industrial structures, thus stressing the need to avoid "one size fits all" regional policies to mitigate the potential negative effects on exposed regions. Tertiary industries’ value-added have been considered an essential input for any production chain, as they have the potential to connect regions and services activities across networks. Moreover, spatially, services move more straightforward than the manufacturing of resource-based industries. This study estimates the interregional and inter-industry linkages regarding a set of services-related economic sectors and accounts for the trade in value-added (TiVA) measures, considering intraregional and interregional trade based on an interstate input-output application for Brazil. The main findings reveal that the poorest Brazilian states tend to lose linkages opportunities in services activities, remaining hostages to supply natural resources to production networks for subnational and foreign demand. On the other hand, the potential for gains from connections in the services’ networks reveals greater spatial dispersion across regional hierarchies, increasing the concentration in large urban agglomerations. In this regard, the paper concludes that the connectivity potential of services at the intraregional level can be an essential starting point to promote innovative systems away from large urban areas in the wealthiest regions inside Brazil, potentially reducing value-added imbalances in internal geography trade flows.

A inovação tecnológica é considerada um fator cada vez mais importante para o uso sustentável dos recursos naturais. Com a tecnologia, pode ser possível manter a quantidade produzida de um determinado bem reduzindo a pressão sobre o meio ambiente. No entanto, o ganho de eficiência no uso direto dos recursos naturais não significa, necessariamente, redução relevante dessa pressão. Para atingir esse objetivo, é preciso estar inserido em uma cadeia de produção sustentável, isto é, o ganho de eficiência não deve se dar somente no uso direto desses recursos, mas também no volume utilizado nos insumos para a produção do bem, o chamado uso indireto. Os objetivos deste artigo são mapear o uso de água ao longo da cadeia de produção no Brasil e estimar os impactos da adoção de tecnologias menos intensivas em água sobre a intensidade hídrica total e o uso de água. Para isso, foi empregado o modelo insumo-produto nacional para o ano de 2017. Os referidos impactos foram estimados a partir da hipótese de adoção de tecnologias menos intensivas em água por parte da agricultura, indústrias e saneamento. Entre os principais resultados, destaca-se que parte considerável da intensidade hídrica total das atividades econômicas se refere à intensidade indireta e que a adoção de tecnologias mais eficientes no uso de água, por parte de algumas atividades econômicas, tem o potencial de reduzir a intensidade hídrica total de outras atividades e de alterar a participação dos diferentes consumidores finais na demanda de água embutida nos bens e serviços.
