RESUMO:Estudo descritivo, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, cujo objetivo foi conhecer o perfil socioeconômico e obstétrico de puérperas assistidas em uma maternidade ao norte do Espírito Santo. Cerca de 54% das mulheres estavam na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos, 83,6% eram casadas ou viviam com parceiro, 49,5% declararam-se pardas, 32,8% possuíam ensino médio completo, 49,8% tinham renda de até um salário mínimo, 61,6% pertenciam à classe C e 89,2% foram atendidas pelo Sistema Único de Saúde. Verificou-se que 72,4% tiveram de uma a duas gestações, 53,9% com intervalo interpartal de 2 a 5 anos, 62,2% com parto cesárea, cerca de 60% realizaram sete consultas ou mais de pré-natal e 87% negaram histórico de abortamento. Conclui-se que o perfil de puérperas é semelhante ao encontrado em outros estudos e evidencia-se a necessidade do serviço estar atento à não realização do pré-natal entre puérperas jovens e alta prevalência de parto cesárea. SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND OBSTETRIC PROFILE OF PUERPERAE ASSISTED IN A PHILANTHROPIC MATERNITY UNITABSTRACT: The aim of this descriptive, cross-sectional and qualitative study was to investigate the socio-economic and obstetric profile of puerperae assisted in a maternity unit in the North of Espírito Santo. Approximately 54% of the women were in the age range 20 to 29 years old, 83.6% were married or lived with a partner, 49.5% stated that they were of mixed race, 32.8% had finished junior high school, 49.8% had an income of not more than one minimum salary, 61.6% belong to social class C and 89.2% were attended by the Unified Health System (SUS). It was ascertained that 72.4% had had one to two pregnancies, 53.9% with an interpartal interval of 2 to 5 years, 62.2% with Caesarean section, approximately 60% had had seven or more pre-natal consultations and 87% denied having a history of miscarriage. It is concluded that the profile of puerperae is similar to that found in other studies and the need is evidenced for the service to be attent to the non-undertaking of pre-natal consultations among young puerperae and the high prevalence of Caesarean births. Objective: to identify factors which constrain or determine the return to sexual activity in the puerperium. Method: exploratory and descriptive study undertaken in a university hospital in the South of Brazil. Fifteen women who had recently given birth, who received a consultation with the nurse in the period August -October 2011, took part in the study. Data was collected after the consultation had finished through semi-structured interviews, in which the women who had recently given birth were asked about the return to sexual activity and the feelings involved in this process. Results: the principal determinant/constraint for return to sexual activity in the post-natal period was the fear of a new pregnancy. Fear of feeling pain, permission from the health professional, shame of their own bodies and changes in libido emerged as constraining and/or determinant factors in the thematic analysis. Conclusion: it is considered fundamental for the issue of contraception to be addressed with the woman/couple during the pre-natal consultation, so that there may be opportunities for reflection and dialog prior to the critical time itself.Descriptors: Postpartum Períod; Sexual Behavior; Women's Health; Contraception. IntroductionThe puerperium is understood as the period which begins straight after birth and ends when the local and general modifications determined by the gestation in the maternal organism return to normal conditions (1) . Some complex physiological and behavioral adaptations occur in women in this period, characterized by involutive phenomena, by the establishment of lactation, by the mother's psychological adaptation, and by the establishment of mother-child and family relationships.The post-natal period is associated generally with a reduction in biological, psychological, marital and family well-being, often entailing a restructuring of the couple's family life as they seek to adapt to this new condition. The changes resulting from the pregnancy and the birth, present in the puerperium, are expressed as pain or abdominal discomfort in the perineal region, pain in the breasts, and muscle pain, which may also entail difficulties in self-care and in care of the baby (2) .Changes in patterns of sexual activity and reduction in desire and sexual pleasure are observed after the birth of the baby, and may persist long after the end of conventional post-natal care. The post-natal period presents reduced or absent sexual activity, especially in relation to coitus, for the majority of women, whose reasons range from the tiredness inherent to pregnancy and to birth itself, to concern with maternal responsibilities, including the time period necessary for the genital apparatus to recover from the birth, particularly in the occurrence of an episiotomy or tear. Determining sexual knowledge and the role of sexual beliefs at postpartum period on Turkish women

Background:Beliefs and knowledge about sexuality affect sexual life related dynamics in postpartum period. This study was conducted in order to determine postpartum women's knowledge and beliefs about sexuality. Materials and Methods: The study had a descriptive, cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 400 women who gave birth in Antalya, Turkey. Data were collected with a data collection form developed by the researchers at face to face interviews. Results:The results of the study showed that 67% of women have right information about the restriction of sexual intercourse at postpartum period and the need of sexuality for women and 30.8% think that sexual intercourse should be resumed before 40 days. But it was determined that the sexual belief about dirtyness of postpartum women and necessity of waiting 40 days to resume sexual intercourse of the women were 88%. The proportion of women receiving information about sexuality at postpartum period were 50.8%. Women's myths about anal/oral intercourse were 67-75%. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was determined that women have lots of myths about postpartum sexuality and women's knowledge is insufficient. It can be recommended that knowledge and beliefs of postpartum women about sexuality should be evaluated and health care should be offered in accordance with their needs.
