The women referred to the changes in their bodies as discomforts, and expressed their concern that these changes would be permanent. They expressed they hoped that, after childbirth, their body would go back to what it was like before pregnancy and that they would recover their sexual desire. Recognition of these concerns is an essential tool to guarantee appropriate professional practices. dEScRiPtoRSHuman body Pregnancy Sexuality Sexual and reproductive health RESUmEnEstudio etnográfico que objetivó comprender el modo en que las gestantes experimentan los procesos fisiológicos de su cuerpo durante el embarazo y su repercusión en la sexualidad. The aim of this study was to determine how women deal with sexuality and bodily changes during the puerperium. A qualitative methodology was used and a semi-structured interview with a leading question script was chosen as the research tool. Six puerperas from the west area of São Paulo (Brazil) took part in this study. The interviews were accomplished at their homes.
Our objective was to assess extrinsic influences upon childbirth. In a cohort of 1,826 days containing 17,417 childbirths among them 13,252 spontaneous labor admissions, we studied the influence of environment upon the high incidence of labor (defined by 75th percentile or higher), analyzed by logistic regression. The predictors of high labor admission included increases in outdoor temperature (odds ratio: 1.742, P = 0.045, 95%CI: 1.011 to 3.001), and decreases in atmospheric pressure (odds ratio: 1.269, P = 0.029, 95%CI: 1.055 to 1.483). In contrast, increases in tidal range were associated with a lower probability of high admission (odds ratio: 0.762, P = 0.030, 95%CI: 0.515 to 0.999). Lunar phase was not a predictor of high labor admission (P = 0.339). Using multivariate analysis, increases in temperature and decreases in atmospheric pressure predicted high labor admission, and increases of tidal range, as a measurement of the lunar gravitational force, predicted a lower probability of high admission.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to understand the meaning of the body to a group of pregnant women, how they experience the body physiologic processes during pregnancy and how they reflect in sexuality as well as to acknowledge their perception about normal birth and its implication to sexual activity. Concepts of medical anthropology were used as theoretical framework and the methodology adopted was ethnography. The research was carried out in a popular district in east area of São Paulo -SP. For data collection it was used semi-structured interviews with guiding questions, and drawing, in a feminine silhouette of how they perceive their body modification during this period. The data were presented in narrative format. The result were organized in six categories and fourteen subcategories which merged to a central theme" Childbirth as a ritual passage in the construction of family" once all the body experiences of gestation, the physiological body changes and its repercussion in sexual performance were present since they started making projects to go into maternity. The results of this study allowed an understanding of the cultural knowledge in relation to the meaning of the body and sexuality in childbirth which is an essential tool for adjusting professional practice.
Objectives: to describe the perineal outcomes of women who had delivered in water and out of water. Methods: a cross-sectional and quantitative study developed in a public hospital in Setúbal, Portugal. The population was of women who participated in the "Water Birth Project" in the period from 2011 to 2014, which gave birth in water and out of water. 104 women were selected according to established inclusion criteria. The groups were compared according to the following variables: demographics, obstetric information, delivery care and perineal outcomes. The data were analyzed in the Stata(r) software, with descriptive and bivariate statistics (chi-square and Fisher's test). Results: the medical records of 73 women who gave birth in water and 31 women who gave birth out of water were studied. Water deliveries were significantly associated with fewer perineal lacerations, lower rates of episiotomy, and shorter delivery time. Conclusions: the results of the study suggest that childbirth in water has a protective effect against severe third or fourth degree perineal tears, during fetal expulsion in water.
