Knowledge Level, Motivators and Barriers of Blood Donation among Students at Qatar University

In Qatar, one out of every ten patients admitted to the hospitals is in urgent need of a blood transfusion or blood products. The aims of this study are as follows: (1) to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about blood donation and (2) to identify the factors that contribute to the willingness to donate blood among young adults. A cross-sectional survey using a constructed questionnaire was conducted among students at Qatar University. A total of 590 responses were collected, out of which 423 were suitable for analysis. Only 72 out of 472 (15%) participants were blood donors. The chi-square test and t-test were then used to study the association of blood donation status with different factors. Significant values were considered to be p ≤ 0.5. Gender and age were found to be significantly associated with blood donation status, with a higher frequency of donation among males and adults above the age of 24 years old. On the other hand, the total knowledge score was found to not be significantly associated with blood donation status with a mean score of 60.5% for both groups (blood donors, non-blood donors). The most common motivators that encouraged blood donors were donating to help people, followed by having a blood mobile unit come to your place, whereas the most common barriers reported by non-blood donors were failing to meet the requirements, followed by “never having been asked to give blood”. This is the first study in Qatar to assess blood donation status. It provides insights that would help in developing effective strategies for the recruitment and retention of young adult blood donors in Qatar and countries with similar cultures. Raising awareness about blood donation, along with providing more mobile blood donation units at public places, will aid in increasing the frequency of blood donation among young adults.

This study aimed to design, develop, and evaluate efficiency of a human-based “U-Blood App” prototype for blood unavailability in Thailand. This study adopted a mixed-method design. The results of the study revealed these key findings. First, the needs analysis of 32 key informants (50% males and a mean age of 40.6 years) indicated that the features of the User Experience (UE) and the User Interface (UI) should contain blood donor’s qualification, general information record of the blood donor’s health, blood donation appointment and notification schedule, the application download and installation, a simple guide for the application user, the hospital logo, and necessary information. Second, the evaluation by experts revealed that the quality of the prototype is high (X¯=4.79) and the quality of UI ( X¯=4.79) was higher than that of UE (X¯=4.70). Lastly, the end users of 65 samples (50.76\% females and a mean age of 48 years) are highly satisfied with the prototype (X¯=4.68). The findings advanced the understanding of the impacts of human factors on the development of smart phone application for blood donation. The overall results cannot be generalized in the long term. Future inquiry should work on this limitation.

El objetivo del estudio fue determinar el nivel de conocimientos sobre donación de sangre que tienen los pacientes externos que acuden a un hospital en Bagua Grande. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal durante mayo a julio del 2019. Se elaboró y aplicó un cuestionario estructurado. Se captó a 244 personas que acudieron a consultorios externos mediante un muestreo sistemático. Los participantes obtuvieron una media de respuestas correctas de 8,90 (DE: 3,25) puntos de un total de 21. Se encontró que la edad y el grado de instrucción estaban correlacionados con el puntaje (rho = -0,21; p 0,001 y rho = 0,38; p 0,001, respectivamente). La procedencia y ocupación afectaron al puntaje (p 0,001). Los conocimientos hallados en la población estudiada son bajos, pero esto no estaría relacionado con el antecedente de donación. Las intervenciones que se elaboren para mejorar la donación de sangre no solo se deben enfocar en brindar conocimientos, ya que otros factores estarían más relacionados con este resultado.
