Bixa orellana (annatto) exerts a sustained hypoglycemic effect in experimental diabetes mellitus in rats

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Bixa orellana (annatto) is a natural pigment and food colorant that has been used for a variety of therapeutic purposes. It has been suggested that annatto could have the property of reducing blood glucose levels. However, most previous studies have demonstrated a hypoglycemic effect in non-diabetic animals. We evaluated the impact of annatto on blood glucose levels in an experimental model of diabetes mellitus. METHOD: Male Wistar rats were made diabetic by a single dose of60 mg/kg streptozotocin, … Show more

“…40 Bixa orellana has demonstrated hypoglycemic effects in healthy 41 and diabetic animal models. 42 However, its mechanism of action is still unclear. In normoglycemic dogs administered 1.75 g kg −1 Bixa orellana extract, a decrease in glucose of 10.93% was observed compared to the control without treatment.…”

“…Literature surveys showed that the seeds and leaves of the plant Bixa orellana (annatto) are known to have hypoglycemic effects [5,6]. Therefore in this study we attempted to study the effect of aqueous extract of leaves of Bixa orellana on antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity in diabetes mellitus.…”
