Bioproduction of riboflavin: a bright yellow history

Abstract: Riboflavin (vitamin B) is an essential nutrient for humans and animals that must be obtained from the diet. To ensure an optimal supply, riboflavin is used on a large scale as additive in the food and feed industries. Here, we describe a historical overview of the industrial process of riboflavin production starting from its discovery and the need to produce the vitamin in bulk at prices that would allow for their use in human and animal nutrition. Riboflavin was produced industrially by chemical synthesis for… Show more

“…Riboflavin is a vitamin and nutritional supplement that is nowadays produced biosynthetically [120,121]. It is of interest to us here because a main producer, Ashbyi gossypii, contains a very active (influx and) efflux transporter for it [122].…”

“…Next, we sought to mate the XUS‐B strain with a previously reported riboflavin (vitamin B2) producing strain . Riboflavin is a dietary vitamin commonly produced by microorganisms industrially . Mating the riboflavin producing strain with a XUS has the benefit of increasing flux through the pentose phosphate pathway so that it could optimally feed into riboflavin production …”
