“…In 2007, the state of São Paulo was responsible for 60% of the sugarcane production in Brazil and 53% of the total area occupied by this crop. The advancement in sugarcane farming activity is occurring mostly in areas formerly used to raise cattle, and primarily through land leasing, which maintains the market for land used for sugarcane production on the rise [19,32,50]. Furthermore, São Paulo has one of the most complete logistics infrastructures in the country [49], which reduces the costs of agricultural activities.…”

“…In addition, others are concerned that sugarcane production has led to competition with food production and negative land use change impacts, such as loss of biodiversity and deforestation (Dauvergne and Neville, 2010;Novo et al, 2010;Maroun and La Rovere, 2014). Brown et al (2014) addressed the difficulty of tracking shifts in agricultural area dedicated to food versus fuel production in Brazil.…”

“…This fact is due to increasing urban demand for dairy products in Brazil where 80 % of the fluid milk, condensed milk and cream are sold in supermarkets. In the state of São Paulo the retail sector is even more important, reaching 85 % of sales of these products (Novo et al, 2010). Conditional cash transfer programs implemented by the Brazilian Federal Government have contributed to this increasing demand for dairy products.…”
