The use of plants have become a important trend in cosmetic market, with a crescent number of patent applications. Despite various herbal-based ingredients have been described in scientific literature, most of them are restricted to patent databases. In this work we analyze the innovative use of plants and its derivatives in cosmetic technologies, based on patent analysis. The investigation was conducted using Derwent World Patents Index (Thomson Reuters Scientific, USA) from 1995 to 2015. The search was carried out to evaluate the number of patent deposits, the patent depositors profiles, the countries with most patent applications, the International Patent Classification (IPC) and the main plant families using in cosmetics. Patent analysis revealed an increase number of applications involving cosmetic containing plants components, with a higher number of deposits related to anti-ageing and whitening skin treatment. Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Poaceae, Rutaceae, Lilliacae and Apiaceae were the key plant families used in cosmetic formulations for skin care treatment. Comparison between scientific and technological data pointed out divergences between patents deposits and aid-based scientific reports. The use of patent analysis in combination with scientific data opens up wider aspects of knowledge and enables a better rationalization of innovative works.

Isso gera a falsa impressão de que a utilização de plantas medicinais pareça um hábito de tempos primitivos de cuidado à saúde, ao invés de uma época de tecnologias sustentáveis, com modelos complexos de entendimento da ação das plantas sobre o ser humano, em que o isolamento de princípios ativos é potencializado com maior eficiência a partir de usos tradicionais das plantas (54) . Diante do potencial terapêutico das plantas para o cuidado e promoção da saúde, considera-se haver um baixo aproveitamento dessas experiências nos serviços da atenção primária à saúde.…”

AbstractIntroduction: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a native plant from Asia that has been used as a spice and medicinal compound for thousands of years. Many of its compounds have been isolated, identified, and studied due to their pharmacological effects. Objectives: Quantify clinical trials reporting some form of therapeutic action from the use of Z. officinale plant, which are listed on the National Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System published between 2010 and 2013 in three scientific databases (SciELO, Science Direct and Springer). Material and Methods: We searched databases using the key search term "Zingiber officinale Roscoe." A total of 757 articles were retrieved. We selected the studies dealing specifically with the term "Zingiber officinale" or related terms such as "ginger," "gingerol," "gingerols," "ginger," and "ginger". Reading the Abstract, we selected those that reported some kind of therapeutic treatment. In the last phase, the selected articles were fully read to search those proving therapeutic potentials from the study of Z. officinale. Results: Thirty articles were included in this review. Six studies reported the antioxidant activity representing the most cited therapy. Conclusion: With the results, it is expected to be possible to guide further research on the species in question, including other diseases not yet explored.Descriptors: Ginger; Therapeutic Use; Primary Health Care.

Sendo assim, é fundamental a preservação desta biodiversidade para o desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas e consequentemente novos fármacos (18) . É possível que o tema "fitoterápico" esteja subvalorizado pela população brasileira em geral devido ao fato do país ter passado pela revolução industrial, desvalorizando os fitoterápicos e plantas medicinais por achar que o uso da fitoterapia seja um resquício dos tempos arcaicos do cuidado.…”
