“…CSF pleocytosis has been well recognised during acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis in childhood (Gall et al 1958, Johnson and Nelson 1977, Hauser et al 1982, but changes in CSF proteins have not been specifically evaluated in very young patients. Adult studies have been performed by Delmotte and Gonsette (1977), using thin layer polyacrylamide isoelectric focusing, which showed that 91 per cent of 262 patients had oligoclonal fractions. We suggest this investigation be performed in children suspected of having a demyelinating disorder and that it be done during a quiescent phase of the illness to avoid frank inflammatory leakage of serum proteins in an acute exacerbation.…”
