Bioactive traditional plant Cinnamomum zeylanicum successfully combat against nephrotoxic effects of aminoglycosides

Abstract: Cinnamomum zeylanicum is traditionally used for the treatment of bladder and kidney problems; believed to have kidney tonic effects. The prime objective of the current study was to explore the nephroprotective effects of the plant due to its strong antioxidant properties, to provide experimental facts for their traditional use. Daily dose of 200 mg/kg of plant extract was employed alone and in combination with gentamicin for a period of twenty one days in rabbits. Biochemical kidney functioning parameters were… Show more

“…The histological studies showed altered pathological changes in the tissues of kidney and pancreas as a result of diabetes in the positive control group [ 1 , 19 ], whereas treating the diabetic rats with cress seed and cinnamon methanol extract restored the altered tissues nearly to the normal conditions. Ullah et al [ 57 ] stated that cinnamon significantly attenuated aminoglycosides-kidney toxicity by improving the urea, creatinine, uric acid, urinary protein levels, and histopathological alterations of the kidneys. In addition, our result is in agreement with that of Al-Malki and El Rabey [ 19 ].…”

“…Ipomoea staphylina leaves , Sechium eduleon , Nigella sativaon (Begum et al, 2006), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Ullah et al, 2013), and grape seed and skin (Hamlaoui et al, 2012) extract shows renoprotective effect.…”

“…Due to species difference, the values for blood urea nitrogen and creatinine are different in present study but the trend of effect in preventing and improving gentamicin caused toxicity by C. nocturnum is almost identical. A similar study had been carried out by Ullah et al, (2013) who investigated the nephroprotective activity of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The data of present study is in agreement with the findings of Ullah et al, (2013) in respect of two parameters i.e.…”
