Benign Pleomorphic Adenomas in Children

Abstract: Benign pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands in children are rare. Reported are 30 patients under the age of 21 years presenting with this neoplasm. Twelve patients were first seen with recurrent or persistent tumor following previous attempts at removal. Retreatment resulted in control of the neoplasm in eight patients with follow-up from 5 to 24 years. Two additional patients have developed malignant degeneration of their neoplasms. All 18 previously untreated patients have remained free of recurrence.… Show more

“…A slightly predominate proportion of females was also found in the present study with a female to male ratio of 1.26:1, resembling previous data from several authors (10,11,16,17,19,20). This difference was more remarkable in the benign group with a female to male ratio of 1.5:1, similar to the literature (10,16,17,(19)(20)(21). Although many studies have shown the tendency for slight female predominance or similar in both genders for malignant tumors (5,9,22,23), the present study has shown a reverse sex predilection with a female to male ratio of 0.73:1.…”

“…In the present study, 52 of 60 cases (65.8%) of benign tumors were PA, 44.2% (23⁄52) of which were localized in the parotid gland and 21.2% (11⁄52) in submandibular glands. As in adults, PA was the most frequent epithelial salivary gland neoplasm in youngsters and parotid gland was the dominant location, which is close to other reports in literature (5,11,20,21,25). This is not compatible with those found by some authors, who describe a relatively greater proportion of PA arising in the submandibular glands in children and adolescents (19).…”

“…In our series of 26 cases of PA, 11 (42.3%) occurred in the submandibular glands, constituting the largest series already recorded of PAs in the submandibular glands of youngsters. However, these findings are not compatible with those found by the majority of authors, who describe parotid glands as the most common site [1,7,12,18,19].…”

“…In general, it shows a slow and asymptomatic growth, with predilection for the female gender [1,3,12,14,18]. In our series, PA was also the most common histological type, with a total of 26 cases (49%) and a female:male ratio of 4.4:1.…”

“…Die Autoren begründen dies durch die kleineren anatomischen Strukturen, die eine Kapselruptur und Tumoraussaat wahrscheinlicher machen. Malone und Baker hingegen [ 247 ] beobachteten bei ihren Patienten nach bis zu 20 Jahren kein Rezidiv. Prinzipiell sollte man sich der genannten Besonderheiten für die Parotidektomie im Kindesalter bewusst sein und diese im Detail auch präoperativ mit den Eltern bzw.…”
