ABSTRACfWatermelon mosaic virus is recorded for the first time in New Zealand. It was found occurring naturally on cucurbits, and has been transferred experimentally to Chenopodium amaranticolor, cucumber, pumpkin, pea, broadbean, sweet pea, lupin, and many clover species.Aphid transmission was not successful, contrary to reports from South Africa and America. The host range, physical properties, serology, and electron microscopy of the virus show that the disease is watermelon mosaic virus of the strain 2 type described by Webb and Scott (1965).
