Baseline assessment of prevalence and geographical distribution of HPV types in Chile using self-collected vaginal samples

Abstract: Background: Chile has broad variations in weather, economics and population from the far desert north (Region 1) to the cold, icy south (Region 12). A home-based self-collected vaginal sampling was nested in the 2003 Chilean population-based health survey in order to explore the possibility of a type-specific geographical variation for human papillomavirus

“…In this regard, it has been determined previously that the clearance time for HPV 16 is longer (12–19 months) than that observed for HPV 84 (6–8 months) [Richardson et al, ; Moscicki et al, ]. Similar to HPV 84, HPV 62 has also been underdiagnosed in women; however, some reports from Chile [Ferreccio et al, ], Turkey [Demir et al, ], the USA [Hariri et al, ], and India [Datta et al, ] place it in the top ranks of low‐risk HPV prevalence.…”

“…Indeed, in the cervical cancer group, HPV types 16, 18, and 45 were the most prevalent, followed by types 52, 58, and 39. HPV 52 has also been reported to fall among the top five places in prevalence in Asia [Quek et al, ; Wu et al, ], the USA [Wentzensen et al, ; Hariri et al, ], Thailand [Siriaunkgul et al, ], Canada [Coutlee et al, ], and Chile [Ferreccio et al, ]. However, the prevalence of this viral type might be underestimated because of cross‐reaction with HPV types 33, 35, and 58 in the Linear Array ® Genotyping Test.…”

“…Meanwhile, a large proportion of women with only one sexual partner (96.9%) in this general population was probably an important cause of low HPV prevalence in Beijing. In previous Asian studies, HPV prevalence was lower, such as in Vietnam (Hanoi, 2.0%; Pham et al, 2003), Thailand (Lampang, 9.1%; Sukvirach et al, 2003) and Indonesia (11.4%; Vet et al, 2008), compared with countries such as Nigeria (Ibadan, 26.3%; Thomas et al, 2004) and Chile (29.2%;Ferreccio et al, 2008).…”
