Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent an important component of the economy in both developed and developing countries. Nowadays, the competitive industrial environment is encouraging these companies to redesign their manufacturing practices. Lean manufacturing (LM) has been widely implemented in several industries and has been shown to have had a positive impact on the performance and development of companies. This review aims to examine this impact on the performance of manufacturing companies, to emphasize the recent progress of LM amongst SMEs worldwide, and to show that most successful LM initiatives are those implemented in SMEs and large companies. However, very small businesses (VSBs) are struggling to introduce LM into their management systems. A new approach has been developed to establish a new lean implementation framework that could be adapted to the specific context of VSBs.

In recent years, sustainability management has become very important in order to achieve the goal that present and future generations can live in a better world, where economic, social and environmental aspects are balanced in harmony. On the other hand, there is a large amount of literature that shows that the application of Lean tools improves the indicators of work accidents and optimizes the management of resources in the project life cycle, making them more sustainable. In fact, experiences of the application of Lean principles and sustainable tools have been disseminated, but few studies have addressed a proposal for a framework or methodology that systematically integrates both approaches. This article presents a review of the literature of the main studies that address the implementation of Lean principles and environmental sustainability management. and proposes a model for evaluating sustainable management performance in building projects where Lean tools are implemented. The methodology used is based on a literature review, in which information was gathered from the documents of the International Conference on Lean Construction (IGLC) and a set of specialized journals on the topics of Lean Construction, Sustainable Management and key performance indicators (KPIs).This document aims to develop a model for evaluating the performance of Environmental sustainability, integrating Lean Construction and Sustainable Management in buildings, using the Delphi method, to reduce damage and unnecessary use of natural resources.

South Africa is a developing country that invests billions of rands annually in the construction industry. This industry consumes resources and, inevitably, waste is generated during the process. Although numerous approaches have been developed to improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness in this industry, lean principles offer the ability to minimise and/or eliminate non-value adding work, thus increasing value for the client. This paper highlights the lean construction tools currently used worldwide, and the benefits of adopting lean construction. The study surveyed publications on the application of lean principles in the construction industry, and identified tools yet to be implemented in the South African construction industry with specific reference to electrical and mechanical engineering services. The study used a systematic review methodology to identify different lean construction concepts, and developed a lean implementation framework. The framework was then evaluated using a local case focusing on electrical and mechanical engineering services in the construction industry. The improved framework after evaluation consists of eight steps.
