Many studies have been conducted on the improvement of operational performance through the implementation of lean manufacturing in the agri-food industries in developed countries. However, only a few have been carried out in Morocco. This approach is not just suitable for the automotive or other specific sectors of the discrete industry; it can now be adapted to other industries, provided that the characteristics of the field of application and the selection of best practices that suit them are taken into consideration. The purpose of this study is to determine the current state of the lean principles adopted by Moroccan food companies (small, medium, and large-sized enterprises). Nine food businesses were contacted, and interviews were conducted with their quality systems managers, operations managers, and chief executives using a structured questionnaire. Results reveal that companies are aware of the importance of continuous improvement tools. Moreover, they partially adopt lean practices, even if they do not call them "lean". Such an encouraging environment, including the implementation of the quality approach and performance assessment tools (dashboard), can be a preamble to the implementation of a lean approach by these organizations. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the application of lean practices in Moroccan food companies.

The COVID-19 crisis hit the economy hard, it is a global situation of declining activity due to a highly contagious disease which has pushed the world to the brink of a deeper recession than ever. Small and medium-sized enterprises constitute 92% of the Moroccan economic fabric, they are among the organizations most seriously affected by the current pandemic. This paper examines the problems that exist before and during this crisis, in order to raise major challenges and choose the ideal approach that will strengthen the competitiveness of these companies. the analysis is based on secondary data and the literature to demonstrate the different constraints of these companies and to show the importance of lean manufacturing as the guarantor of industrial performance. the main question is how the alignment of Lean principals goes well with the desired improvement and with the constraints posed by this crisis, the primary objective of Lean is to provide the means to succeed and accelerate competitiveness. Finally, these circumstances can be a real opportunity to assist Small and Medium Moroccan companies to integrate the methods they need, and “Lean approach” is one of the best performance solutions to adopt in a post COVID-19.

The proposal of synthetic charting is based on the normality assumption. This assumption, however, is hard to attain in practice. Therefore, it is important to examine how the chart would response under some types of non-normal data. The focus of this article is to monitor location shifts using a synthetic chart and to validate its performance under the g-and-h distributions. This study shows that the effect of non-normality on the standard synthetic chart is not trivial, especially when the underlying distributions are heavy-tailed. With these types of distribution, Phase II monitoring of location using median-based estimators is advisable. In doing so, the synthetic chart is more robust to departure in the normality assumption with little effect on its out-of-control performance. This paper shows how the synthetic parameters should be attained to reflect the use of the modified one-step M-estimator (MOM) in its Winsorized version, and the median for Phase II. The assessment is based on the average run length and supported by the extra quadratic loss function. Finally, the practical application of the proposed synthetic charts is illustrated using real data.
