Bacillus filamentosus sp. nov., isolated from sediment sample

Abstract: A novel Gram-stain positive, endospore-forming bacterium, designated SGD-14(T), was isolated from a marine sediment sample in Goa Province, India. Cells of the isolate were found to be strictly aerobic. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SGD-14(T) showed a similarity of 99.5 % with Bacillus endophyticus and similarities to other Bacillus type strains were below 96 %. The whole-cell sugar pattern was found to consist of ribose, xylose and glucose. The predominant menaqu… Show more

“…ZCA4 was an endosporeforming bacterium. These observations are in agreement with those of Bacillus filamentosus SGD-14 T (Sonalkar et al, 2015), Janibacter indicus 0704P10-1 T (Zhang et al,2014), and Brevibacterium casei NCDO 2048 (CMD1) (Collins et al,1983).…”

“…These testers can be used to easily differentiate between the strains. The observation that ZCA4 consumed an array of different carbon and nitrogen sources is in general agreement with that reported for B. filamentosus SGD-14 T (Sonalkar et al,2015), J. indicus 0704P10-1 T (Zhang et al,2014), and B. casei NCDO 2048 (CMD1) (Collins et al,1983). However, some differences do exist between our strains and the relevant type strains.…”

“…Members of the genus Bacillus are a diverse group of bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes . At the time of writing, there are 18 species reported from India, of which 17 have validly published names, including Bacillus filamentosus (Sonalkar et al , 2015), Bacillus lonarensis (Reddy et al , 2015), Bacillus enclensis (Dastager et al , 2014) and Bacillus rhizosphaerae (Madhaiyan et al , 2011), while one species, ‘ Bacillus mesophilum ’ (Manickam et al , 2014), does not yet have a validly published name. Members of the genus Bacillus are characterized by Gram-stain-positive, oval to rod-shaped cells, aerobic or facultative anaerobic growth and endospore formation.…”
