Internal Balloon Compression: A Method to Achieve Hemostasis when Removing an Inadvertently Placed Pacemaker Lead from the Subclavian Artery

Abstract: One of the possible complications of subclavian vein puncture is entry into the subclavian artery. If this is not recognized, a pacemaker lead may be placed arterially. Since this may lead to systemic emboli, the pacemaker lead must be removed. This case report describes a patient in whom an atrial lead was inadvertently placed in the ascending aorta, where it had good sensing values but poor atrial capture threshold values. This lead was subsequently removed and hemostasis was achieved with intraarterial ball… Show more

“…In some studies, an increased susceptibility to squamous cell carcinoma of the lung or the upper aerodigestive tract was associated with these homozygote (m/m) polymorphisms (Sato et al , 2000). In other investigations, no such association was found (Oude Ophuis et al , 1998; Gronau et al , 2000). In this investigation, the homozygote mutation in the MSP I restriction site as in the exon 7 was found only once in the control group.…”

“…The fact that polymorphisms are readily detectable by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) resulted in a number of studies dealing with the association of gene polymorphisms and cancer susceptibility. However, current data on the association of glutathione S‐transferases (GST) and cytochrome p450 oxidase with tobacco smoke related cancer are conflicting (Oude Ophuis et al , 1998; Ford et al , 2000; Sato et al , 2000).…”

“…Lead extraction from the subclavian artery is only rarely reported. Oude Ophuis et al removed a lead a few days after implant with traction 2 . Mazetti et al removed a lead in situ for 30 days but did not specify the technique used 11 .…”

“…A left ventricular endovascular position of a pacemaker lead rarely results from inserting a lead via the subclavian artery towards the left ventricle 1–4 . We describe a transfemoral approach to lead extraction in a patient in whom the subclavian artery insertion was detected late after implant.…”
