“…Considering the biological risk of the studied population because of prematurity and NICU hospitalization, the results were similar to the ones found in Crestani et al 23 , which observe lower frequency of exclusive breastfeeding significantly associated to low birth weight, in cases of peri and post-natal complications. Likewise, small gestational age infants were associated to late establishment of exclusive breastfeeding in 5,6 days 24 , while the best conditions for the beginning of breastfeeding in preterm infants were verified in cases of higher gestational age and more days of life 25 . The difficulty found to breastfeed preterm infants born with low weight (≤ 2000g) and the mother's complaint about breast sucking in the first month were factors related to the interruption of exclusive breastfeeding 14 .…”

“…Prematurity being recognized as prevalent in the context of public health, also recognizing its consequences for health, the structuring axes of the same policy include guidelines for the monitoring of child growth and development, breastfeeding and comprehensive care for children in acute situations and vulnerabilities, representing challenges in the qualified monitoring of premature infants. (16,20,21) The findings of this research reveal the relevance of using booklets with instructions of care for premature infants at neonatal care services, so that the family feels safer with regard to hospital and home care. This empowerment is largely due to qualified nursing care in health education and promotes health in childhood, preventing injuries and contributing to the reduction of neonatal mortality, which accounts for 40% of infant mortality and is still a major challenge in the health area.…”

“…Research show that feeding the premature baby with milk taken from the mother provides benefits for immunity, digestion and nutrients absorption. The recommendation of breastfeeding has been defended on the basis of its immunological properties, gastrointestinal maturation, in the mother-child bond and it improves neurocomportamental performance (6)(7) .…”

“…However, we observe that, in practice, premature babies begin oral feeding in an unsystematic manner, with no evaluation standard of the right time. Research is diversified as to the use and content of evaluation protocols for oral feeding initiation (3,(7)(8)(9) .…”
