Auxin movement in corn coleoptiles

Abstract: Movement of radioactive auxins was analysed in corn coleoptile sections. The results support the idea that processes involved in the transport of indoleacetic acid (IAA) are specific for growth-promoting auxins.Inhibition of IAA transport by triiodobenzoic acid is caused by a reversible block of the exit; the auxin held back remains in the transport pool. The observed increase in immobilization may be a secondary effect caused by the increased concentration of free IAA in the tissue.Auxin molecules are most li… Show more

“…The amount of NAGlu increased steadily from zero time to 32 hr and then leveled off. The relative level of NAGlu remained almost constant, indicating that, like IAGlu, as long as NAGlu is formed and retained by the tissue, no significant turnover can be observed (16). The increase in NAAsp formation was correlated with a decrease in the free NAA in leaf tissues, where the maximal level of free NAA occurred after 1 hr with a marked and steady decrease during the next 15 hr (Fig.…”

“…4), and the plateau in the dose-response curve is essentially unchanged. Further, 1-NAA is transported through sections almost as well as IAA while 2,4-D is not (7). The dose-response curve for 1-NAA does not show a plateau (Fig.…”

“…Some of these phenomena have been explained as being manifestations of the movement of the plant hormones known as auxins, which have been known to move polarly since 1928 (10,19). After it was shown (7,8,11,16) that even the synthetic auxin-type herbicide 2, 4-D moved through excised shoot tissues with a polarity like that of the endogenous auxin IAA, other classes of hormones were tested. Just recently, GA. was found to move with a polarity very similar to IAA through Coleus petioles and with opposite polarity to IAA through corn root sections (12)(13)(14).…”
