Automation of irrigation by electronic tensiometry based on the arduino hardware platform

Abstract: This study developed and evaluated an electronic irrigation system controlled by soil water matric potential. The controller uses tensiometers and pressure transducers as a reading mechanism, integrated with an Arduino microcontroller board that drives the solenoid valves and a 1/3 hp single-phase motor. Four electronic tensiometers were installed in plastic containers filled with 6 kg of Red-Yellow Latosol (RYL) with a clayey texture, and another four in plastic containers filled with 7 kg of Regolitic Neosol… Show more

“…The sensors showed similar tension values during the experimental test, but small fluctuations were observed, as predicted in other studies on pressure sensor calibration (Pereira et al, 2020). Fluctuation errors occur due to ambient temperature variation, causing expansion or contraction of the air present inside the tensiometer (Brito et al, 2014).…”

“…Studies using mechanical and or electronic/automated tensiometers to determine soil moisture (Thalheimer, 2013;Arruda et al, 2017;Abd El-Baset et al, 2018;Goodchild et al, 2018;Li et al, 2020;Pereira et al, 2020) have shown a reduction in labor and volume of applied water, increasing the system efficiency. Furthermore, although automated tensiometers can be simple to use and low cost for farmers, most commercial irrigation controllers connected by soil sensors are programmable with only fixed times.…”

“…e host computer analyzes and processes the data, and interacts with the input module and PLC through the Internet of ings to read the type data of the brewing process. At the same time, the Arduino platform [20] is used to control the servo motor, so as to drive the liquor tube to achieve automatic grading of Baijiu. e input module includes liquid turbine flow sensor, L-Dens2300 online density sensor, etc.…”

“…The main objective was to reduce the costs and complexity of the prototype to facilitate rebuilding by potential users, thus data retrieval was done using the memory of the MCU board and collected by a mobile pc in situ every two weeks. Pereira et al [ 28 ] built on the same concept using Arduino Mega MCU, pressure transducers, real-time clock, and an SD card module. The prototype was capable of measuring and recording the tension readings as a .txt file on the SD card coupled with a time stamp.…”
