Authentication as Institutional Maintenance Work

Abstract: Institutional maintenance work refers to actors’ deliberate effort to maintain an institution. This paper examines how actors use authentication, i.e., the relational constitution of an artefact as original or as a genuine expression of a particular type, style or person, to accomplish institutional maintenance work. We investigated contemporary adjustments to six listed buildings. These works were undertaken to keep these buildings functional while at the same time protecting their listing; by doing so they c… Show more

“…If and how PNGOs can contribute to structuring the institutional environment in which they operate are questions that arise from this study. Here, unveiling dimensions of institutional work (Colombero & Boxenbaum, 2019) and institutional entrepreneurship (Martì & Mair, 2009) would be relevant theoretical lenses. Lastly, our qualitative endeavor within an extreme institutional context and the trust issues identified in the methodology during our data collection paves the way for pivotal studies on conducting qualitative research in extreme contexts where trust is a key issue due to historic legacies (e.g., Hällgren et al, 2018).…”

“…We also complement the scarce research on the location dimension (e.g. Colombero & Boxenbaum, 2019) by providing finer-grained analysis of its role in transferability (Jones, 2019) and, notably, by highlighting the great role played by relocation of buildings.…”

“…Although insightful, these studies do not generally examine how artefacts can adapt and how this can contribute to institutional maintenance. An exception is the study by Colombero and Boxenbaum (2019). Studying architectural heritage institutions in France and Denmark, they demonstrate that authentication plays an important role in making adaptations to buildings relevant and necessary for institutional maintenance.…”

“…Past literature generally ignores the question of how a relatively old, established institution can be used to maintain a relatively new, alternative institution. The literature is mainly about the internal mechanisms of institutional maintenance (Acquier et al, 2018;Blanc and Huault, 2011;Clark and Newell, 2013;Collien et al, 2016;Colombero and Boxenbaum, 2019;Grafstrom and Windell, 2012;Nite et al, 2016;Raviola and Norback, 2013;Styhre, 2013;Wright et al, 2017), with the implicit assumption that alternative institutions disrupt rather than maintain other institutions. Alternative institutions are considered as threats.…”

“…Among the mechanisms is also technology commonly used as part of institutional routines and practices (Colombero and Boxenbaum, 2019;Grafstrom and Windell, 2012;Norback, 2019;Turnbull and Wass, 2015). As an example, unpaid work is an institutional practice among police inspectors facilitated by technology (Turnbull and Wass, 2015).…”
