How the Malleability of Material Artefacts Contributes to Institutional Maintenance: The Guimard Metropolitan railway entrances, 1914–2000

Abstract: Our paper investigates how an institution can be maintained over a long period of time through adaptations to the material artefact which instantiates it. To illustrate our argument, we conduct a historical case study of the Guimard Metropolitan railway entrances, a material artefact which instantiates the Belle Epoque institution from 1914 to 2000. Based on our findings, we develop a process model of institutional maintenance based on the malleability of a material artefact. Supported by three types of interr… Show more

“…Organizational theory defines artifacts as "discrete material objects, consciously produced or transformed by human activity, under the influence of the physical and/or cultural environment" (Boutinot & Delacour, 2022, p. 1969. Each artifact possesses properties related PALMI to its form, its function, and the integration of its form and function that provide utilitarian, hedonic, and/or semiotic value to the user (Bloch, 2011;Luchs & Swan, 2011;Rindova & Petkova, 2007).…”

“…Hence, firms can employ product design as a tool for valuation and institutional entrepreneurship (Boxenbaum et al, 2018; Huff et al, 2021; Lawrence et al, 2013). Although institutional research has started to demonstrate the central role of material objects in instantiating, diffusing, and institutionalizing novel ideas (e.g., Boutinot & Delacour, 2022; Jones & Massa, 2013; Sgourev, 2021), very few studies have hitherto examined product design strategies for valuation and institutional entrepreneurship. Two notable exceptions have analyzed how Thomas Edison designed his system of electric lighting to boost its acceptance (Hargadon & Douglas, 2001) and how firms designed their products to gain legitimacy in the newly legalized U.S. cannabis market (Huff et al, 2021).…”

“…One explanation for why our repair-focused model can address dualing needs is because it enables both renewal and ongoing vitality as change blends with nurturing the core of the institution and responding to significant threats. Repair becomes a means for both change and maintenance (Boutinot & Delacour, 2022). In the face of threats or during times of crisis, repair represents one possible pathway to build more resilient institutions.…”
