The in vitro algaecide activity of quaternary ammonium (QA) against Prototheca isolated from bovine clinical mastitis was investigated, in which the clinical severity was scored, milk samples were subjected to microbiological culture, and algal species were identified by molecular typing. A total of 4275 milk clinical samples of different cows from ten large dairy farms were used. Forty-four (1%) samples of cows from three dairy farms yielded growth of Prototheca, of which 88.6% (39/44) were identified as Prototheca bovis and 11.3% (5/44) as Prototheca sp. by MALDI-TOF MS, whereas 100% of the isolates were identified as P. bovis using PCR sequencing of the cytb gene. Among cows for which clinical severity scoring was available, 78.8% (26/33) and 21.2% (7/33) had mild and moderate infections, respectively, whereas no animal showed severe clinical signs. The algaecide activity of QA in Prototheca was observed in low concentrations among all isolates, in 20.4% (9/44) at 35 ppm, 36.4% (16/44) at 17 ppm, and 43.2% (19/44) at an 8 ppm, in addition to activity on three reference Prototheca strains. Overall, the study highlights the predominance of P. bovis as the causative agent of algal mastitis in bovines. Prototheca induced abnormalities preponderantly in the milk and mammary gland tissue of cows, and to our knowledge, our study is the first to apply clinical severity scoring in protothecal mastitis. In addition, the study underlines the activity of QA in low concentrations against Prototheca, indicating its potential use as an antiseptic/disinfectant in milking facilities and dairy environments.

Microbiological contamination in a university veterinary hospital

This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological contamination of the different sectors of a university veterinary hospital, the efficiency of the sanitation procedures performed, and the resistance to antimicrobials and disinfectants. Fourteen environmental samples and seven swab samples were collected from procedure tables of the different sectors. During analysis, the following microorganisms were found: bacterial species Rothia spp., coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus spp. and zygomycete fungi (could not be classified in genus due to the absence of reproductive structures) and other fungal species Cladosporium spp., Epicoccum spp., Drechslera spp., Scopulariopsis spp., and Penicillium spp. The bacterial species were submitted to a sensitivity assessment of the antimicrobials used in routine prescription. Rothia spp. and S. aureus were resistant only to erythromycin (15 µg), coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. were resistant to erythromycin (15 µg) and sulfazotrim (25 µg), and Enterococcus spp. were resistant to ampicillin (10 µg). For the effectiveness test of disinfectants, the products used to sanitize hospital surfaces were tested. All microorganisms in this study were resistant to 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Rothia spp. and Enterococcus spp. were resistant to 70% ethyl alcohol. The best results were found using pure sodium hypochlorite and benzalkonium chloride, pure and diluted to 20%, which showed a bactericidal effect against all tested microorganisms. These data are relevant for knowledge of the hospital microbiota at the intersection of possible cases of hospital infections.

Na evolução da avicultura, diversas mudanças no manejo, nutrição, genética e ambiente puderam ser observadas ao longo dos anos. O perfil do consumidor de produtos avícolas mudou e estão cada vez mais estão conscientes da necessidade da adoção das práticas de bem-estar na produção de aves. Assim, objetiva-se com esta revisão bibliográfica evidenciar o atual cenário dos principais países produtores avícolas, destacando legislações e recomendações para criação que recaem sobre o bem-estar. Os modelos intensivos de produção causam alterações nos comportamentos inerentes à espécie. Essa situação ocorre devido à vivência em um ambiente estressante, com alta taxa de lotação ao se tratar de aves de corte ou alojamento em gaiolas durante todo o período produtivo das aves de postura. Sob ponto de vista prático, o bem-estar positivo pode ser obtido através da disposição dos animais em um ambiente adequado para sua criação, permitindo expressar o máximo de comportamentos e aspectos naturais. A percepção por parte dos consumidores da senciência dos animais, impulsionou o mercado a realizar mudanças no sistema produtivo, além disso, a obrigatoriedade de atender as legislações internacionais e nacionais foram funda-mentais para melhora no bem-estar na avicultura, já que determinam padrões essenciais para a melhora da qualidade de vida destes animais em confinamento.
