Astaxanthin from shrimp by-products ameliorates nephropathy in diabetic rats

Abstract: Our results suggest that shrimp astaxanthin may play an important role in reduction of oxidative damage and could prevent pathological changes in diabetic rats suggesting promising application of shrimp astaxanthin in diabet treatment.

“…It was demonstrated that astaxanthin not only binds to this receptor but also affects its mRNA expression [19]. In agreement, the antihyperglycemic effect of astaxanthin is reported elsewhere [20,21]. However, in contrast to these findings, Chen and colleagues reported that astaxanthin, despite its protective effects on kidney and liver of the diabetic rats, did not modify hyperglycemia [22].…”

“…Data from clinical trials suggest that ATX supplementation might prevent oxidative damage in smokers by suppressing lipid peroxidation and stimulating the activity of the antioxidant system [23]. In rats with diabetic nephropathy, shrimp ATX exerts an important role in the reduction of oxidative damage and in preventing pathological changes; it also attenuates diabetes-associated coagulatory and inflammatory stress [15,24]. All these data suggest a promising application of ATX in CKD treatment.…”

“…• and O 2 •− and reducing the cytosolic Ca 2+ [17].In diabetes, major damage occurs in tissues such as kidney, astaxanthin can protect cell damages in thediabetic kidney [18]. In the kidneys of astaxanthin fed diabetic mice, cells positive for 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine(8-OHdG), an index of oxidative stress, were significantly decreased, thus leading to the prevention of diabetic nephropathy [15].…”
