Association between interleukin-1β-511C/T polymorphism and reflux esophagitis in Japan

Abstract: IL-1beta-511T was associated with reflux esophagitis having hyperacidity. Differences of genetic background regarding gastric acid secretion may exist between Japanese and Caucasians.

“…However, iceA1 is much dominant compared to iceA2 in our country, and is consistent with Holland (35), Japan (36) and Hong Kong (37) fi ndings. Studies conducted in USA (38), Columbia (39) and Brazil showed that iceA2 was dominant (40). Peek et al (41) and van Doorn et al (35) reported meaningful association between iceA1 genotype and peptic ulcer, and no statistically signifi cant difference was found in our study between the two groups with refl ux esophagitis and peptic ulcer in terms of iceA1 and iceA2 (IceA1 p=0,556, IceA2 p=0,747).…”

“…There is a limited number of studies relating to gastroesophageal refl ux disease and cytokine gene polymorphism. Muramatsu et al reported increased IL-1β-511C/T polymorphism in patients with refl ux esophagitis (40).…”

“…The results of the study carried out in Japan were very different from the previous published ones. It is concluded that the levels of IL-1β (-511) C were correlated to the higher gastric mucosal IL-1β levels (11). The contradictory results guided the presence of ethnic differences of IL-1gene polymorphisms in patients with GERD.…”

“…A prospective study by Queiroz et al [25] indicated that T allele at IL-1B-511 was a protective factor against GERD. However, Muramatsu et al [24] found that the frequency of IL-1B-511 T alleles was significantly higher in GERD. In addition, Lzakovicova et al [23] claimed T allele of IL-1B-511 was not associated with GERD.…”
