A pilot study of Helicobacter pylori genotypes and cytokine gene polymorphisms in reflux oesophagitis and peptic ulcer disease

Abstract: Abstract:Helicobacter pylori causes various diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. While majority of the people infected with H. pylori is asymptomatic, 15-20 % of them develop such diseases. The main factors, which determine the development of H. pylori related diseases might be bacterial virulence, host genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to reveal the factors that play a role in the disease development in patients with refl ux esophagitis and peptic ulc… Show more

“…Colon cancer comes third among the most common types of cancer (MJ 2002;Akdogan et al, 2014). Adipocytokines produced by adipose tissue have been investigated as new risk factors for cancer and metabolic syndromes (Nakajima et al, 2010;Akdogan et al, 2014).…”

“…73 It is capable of inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IFN-γ, IL-1, IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and GM-CSF and inducing B-cell proliferation and differentiation. 74,75 A C-T base transition located at positions -819, and C-A base transition at position -592 have been identified in the 5´ flanking region of the IL-10 gene. These SNPs are related to different serum level of IL-10 in vivo.…”

“…H. pylori infection has been associated with a variety of diseases, such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric carcinoma. However, the majority of people infected with H. pylori are asymptomatic, and only 15%-20% of them develop such gastroduodenal diseases [2]. It has been hypothesized that a combination of environmental/behavioral variables, host genetic factors and bacterial pathogenicity genes determine the clinical outcome of H. pylori infection and the severity of gastric damage [3].…”
