Association between infestation by Lynxacarus radovskyi (Acari: Lystrophoridae) and the occurrence of Feline Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex

Abstract: Lynxacarus radovskyi are mites commonly found within domestic feline hair stems. The infested animal presents an opaque fur with a ''salt and pepper'' aspect. The contamination may occur by direct contact with other infected animals or by fomites, and the main diagnostic tool is the direct examination of the fur. The Feline Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex (FEGC) is a dermatological pattern of an immune answer against many types of injuries in felines, mainly during allergic reactions, and the treatment of choic… Show more

“…These mites, which are parasites that infest the fur of domestic and wild felids, occur mostly in tropical and humid climates. The mite's life cycle begins on the host, through direct contact or via fomites (Rocha et al, 2019).…”

“…In particular, pruritus may not be proportional to the infestation severity, because cats with few mites can still develop intense pruritus. 4,5 Some clinical signs, such as vomiting and constipation, can be present due to excessive grooming, with consequent increase of fur ingestion and trichobezoar formation. 1,6 Topical therapies that previously have been shown to be effective include 1% selenium sulfide, sulfurous or tetramethylthiuram sulfide soap, 6,7 application of a D-phenothrin (pyrethroid) spray formulation (100-200 mg/kg) 8 and application of a fipronil (phenylpyrazole) spray formulation (7.5-15 mg/kg).…”
