Lynxacarus radovskyi are mites commonly found within domestic feline hair stems. The infested animal presents an opaque fur with a ''salt and pepper'' aspect. The contamination may occur by direct contact with other infected animals or by fomites, and the main diagnostic tool is the direct examination of the fur. The Feline Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex (FEGC) is a dermatological pattern of an immune answer against many types of injuries in felines, mainly during allergic reactions, and the treatment of choice are corticosteroids. The objective of this work was to document the linxcariosis cases at the Veterinary Hospital Professor Ricardo Alexandre Hippler-University of Vila Velha. Futhermore, the work also meant to research the association between the parasite contagion and the occurrence of FEGC injuries, which commonly occurred. Between April 2017 and August 2018, there were 8 reported cases of felines infested with L. radovskyi. The diagnoses were made with Acetate tape impression or by direct fur examination. Seven out of the eight cats presented with at least one characteristic injury of the FEGC. In all of them the chosen treatment was moxidectin or spot-on imidacloprid plus corticotherapy on the cats with FEGC, which were effective.
Foi realizado um estudo para verificar se há associação entre a ocorrência de mastocitoma cutâneo e dermatite atópica em cães atendidos de 2014 à 2018, com a casuística do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Vila Velha. Foram avaliados os sinais clínicos e exames de pacientes atendidos com diagnóstico de mastocitoma e, com base nos critérios de Favrot, que foram criados com base nas características clínicas do paciente com dermatite atópica canina para facilitar o diagnóstico pelo médico veterinário dermatologista. Dos 26 cães com mastocitoma, 15 (58%) também eram atópicos, (sendo nove (60%) fêmeas castradas e seis (40%) machos castrados). Dos demais, ou seja, 11 animais (42%), seis (55%) eram fêmeas e cinco (45%) machos. Observou-se então nesta pesquisa que os animais atópicos foram os que mais frequentemente apresentaram mastocitoma, sugerindo uma associação entre as duas doenças. Os achados obtidos neste trabalho reforçam a associação entre elas, pois a maioria dos animais com mastocitoma cutâneo também apresentava dermatite atópica canina (n=15), pois atendiam a cinco ou mais critérios de Favrot, ao contrário do grupo controle, com outras quatro neoplasias epiteliais (carcinoma de células escamosas, carcinoma de células basais, tricoblastoma e tricoepitelioma) os quais nenhum animal (n=16) apresentou dermatite atópica canina associada.
Toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is widely distributed worldwide. Seroprevalence in pets is a reliable tool to determine environmental parasite presence and human risk of infection due to proximity to these animals. In this context, the frequency of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies in sera of dogs and cats from Espirito Santo, Brazil and risk factors associated with the infection (sex, age, allocation, and breed) were assessed. Antibodies against T. gondii were detected in 39.4% (149/378) and 38.1% (142/373) of the dogs by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), respectively. In cats, antibodies were detected in 15.2% (12/79) by ELISA and 7.6% (6/79) by IFAT. Canine infection was associated with stray origin and older ages. Feline females showed a higher chance of infection. There was an agreement between techniques in the detection of antibodies in dogs (k = 0.82) and cats (k = 0.63). These results indicate the parasite presence in the urban environment, suggesting the possibility of infection to humans and other animals. However, this risk is lower while considering pet domiciled animals with a more controlled diet and better hygiene conditions.
Cistites fúngicas são raras em felinos e normalmente estão precedidas de outras doenças do trato urinário, imunossupressão e tratamentos prévios. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar um caso de cistite fúngica por Candida spp. em um felino, macho, castrado, de 3 anos de idade sem raça definida (SRD). O animal foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário “Professor Ricardo Alexandre Hippler” localizado na cidade de Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, no ano de 2021, apresentando os sinais clínicos de disúria, periúria, polaciúria e incontinência urinária, além do histórico de desobstrução uretral há dois meses. Na sedimentoscopia urinária foram observadas estruturas compatíveis com fungo, confirmado posteriormente pela cultura de urina que identificou o gênero Candida spp. O tratamento recomendado para o paciente foi o antifúngico Fluconazol administrado por via oral, apresentando melhora dos sinais clínicos após 28 dias de exposição ao tratamento. Com 44 dias do início do tratamento o animal apresentou recidiva dos sinais clínicos, uma nova urinálise e urocultura foi realizada no qual a enterobactéria Klebsiella pneumoniae foi identificada, e a amostra foi negativa para Candida spp. O tratamento com fluconazol foi eficaz para eliminar a cistite fúngica causada posteriormente a desobstrução uretral do paciente, entretanto apresentou cistite bacteriana posteriormente.
This study aimed to report the first occurrence of Leporacarus gibbus in a domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) from the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The two-year-old male rabbit came from a rural area and was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital Professor Ricardo Alexandre Hippler with intense pruritus throughout the body, severe hair loss, crustal lesions on the outer surface of the ears, and desquamation mainly in the dorsal region. A skin scraping and trichogram were performed. In the microscopic evaluation of the hairs obtained from the dorsal region, mites with morphology compatible with L. gibbus were observed. Cheyletiella parasitovorax and Psoropotes cuniculi were also detected in the same region. Treatment with ivermectin (0.4 mg/kg) was prescribed with three applications every 14 days, over a period of six weeks. This report presents the first description of the occurrence of L. gibbus in the state of Espírito Santo concomitant with poly-infestation of C. parasitovorax and P. cuniculi, and it is hoped that this will provide a research tool for future work in the region.
