Assessment of nursing care using indicators generated by software

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: to analyze the efficacy of the Nursing Process in an Intensive Care Unit using indicators generated by software. METHOD: cross-sectional study using data collected for four months. RNs and students daily registered patients, took history (at admission), performed physical assessments, and established nursing diagnoses, nursing plans/prescriptions, and assessed care delivered to 17 patients using software. Indicators concerning the incidence and prevalence of nursing diagnoses, rate of effectiveness,… Show more

“…The nursing outcome based on the NOC taxonomy appears to meet a requirement for hospital accreditation: assessment of nursing actions. Data collected in another study enabled the analysis of the efficiency of the computerized nursing process using indicators generated by a system in an ICU in which the nurses identified the problems and risks for the patients, planning systematized care (22) . Composing the database of the nursing information system, the NIC interventions list facilitates nursing practice and provides data to carry out research that will contribute to a higher visibility to the work of nurses (23) .…”

“…This tool supports the identification of patients' care needs and favors both planning and assessment of the care process (11) . The electronic recording of prescriptions is positive, because it promotes care standardization (12) , data organization, directing nursing actions, and saves time (13) . However, it has also caused a number of problems, since the use of computer systems without employing clinical and critical thinking makes nursing actions automatic and repetitive, which interferes on decision making and care quality (14) .…”
