Assessment of maturity in orthodontics: A review

Abstract: Precise evaluation of maturational stage should be an integral part of both diagnosis and treatment. Different authors had reported different methods in an attempt to determine the best indicator of maturity. These include body height, body weight; sexual maturation; frontal sinus, chronological age, biological age or physiological age; hand-wrist maturity cervical vertebrae; dental eruption; dental calcification stages and biomarkers. Ever the method has its own advantages, disadvantages and over the other me… Show more

“…In most of the conditions, skeletal age is assessed to pinpoint identify the different phases of the growth spurt. Skeletal maturity assessment involves visual inspection of the developing bone and their initial appearance, sequential ossification and related changes in shape and size [1][2][3].…”

“…Skeletal maturity has been assessed by using different techniques, the classic method of assessing skeletal maturity is by using hand wrist radiographs and the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method [1][2][3][4][5]. However, bone growth and remodeling are not only under the control of local factors, but systemic factors also play a crucial role.…”

“…But still studies are being conducted to explore the best method to assess the maturity of an individual. 27 However further studies on larger samples with many observers need to be carried out to accept or reject the hypothesis regarding the newly proposed RMS-MP3 classification.…”

“…Prediction of sexual maturity requires a physical examination; hence, the use of sexual maturity as maturation marker is limited in the orthodontic setup. 9 On the contrary, skeletal maturity "or bone age" can be determined by the maturation of one or more tissues including skeletal, dental, and sexual maturity. 10 The visual inspection of bones, their first appearance, and related changes in shape and size are tools for assessing skeletal maturity.…”
