Assessing protein energy wasting in a Malaysian haemodialysis population using self-reported appetite rating: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundPoor appetite could be indicative of protein energy wasting (PEW) and experts recommend assessing appetite in dialysis patients. Our study aims to determine the relationship between PEW and appetite in haemodialysis (HD) patients.MethodsHD patients (n=205) self-rated their appetite on a scale of 1 to 5 as very good (1), good (2), fair (3), poor (4) or very poor (5). Nutritional markers were compared against appetite ratings. Using logistic regression analysis associations between dichotomized appetit… Show more

“…These records were analyzed for energy and protein intake using the Nutritionist Pro™ 2.2.16 software (First DataBank Inc., 2004), which includes a database for ethnicspecific Malaysian foods [29,30]. Appetite assessment was also performed using a previously validated tool for the Malaysian dialysis population [31,32].…”

“…The main mechanisms under loss of appetite in CKD are malnutrition and chronic inflammation 27. In a study with HD patients, 83.3% of those with protein energy deficit were found to have poor appetite 28. Adequate energy and nutrients intake and maintaining nutritional status of these patients may improve quality of sleep by their positive impact on appetite.…”

“…1 It has been reported that PEW is related to appetite ratings. 2 In addition, it has been pointed out that malnutrition accelerates aortic calcification and is closely related to cardiovascular disease onset and mortality. 3,4 In these studies, nutritional status was assessed using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI).…”
