Clinical efficacy and feasibility of whey protein isolates supplementation in malnourished peritoneal dialysis patients: A multicenter, parallel, open-label randomized controlled trial

Abstract: A single macronutrient approach with WPS in malnourished CAPD patients was shown to achieve DPI adequacy and improvements in weight, BMI, skin fold measures, serum urea and nPCR level. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03367000).

“…Of these articles, one randomized trial was excluded for its inappropriate age range of the participants [ 42 ]. Finally, we identified 15 articles with 589 subjects in our study [ 31 41 , 43 , 46 48 ]. Among these publications, although there was a study in which the age range of the subjects were from 17 to 65 years [ 39 ], we eventually included this study through discussion, as the clinical characteristics of people who aged 17 years old are very close to those of the adults and that study showed a high quality according to the Jadad score.…”

“…Although some reviews reporting nutritional supports for patients with CKD were published previously [ 26 30 ], they were either descriptive [ 26 29 ], or included a very small size of trials [ 30 ]. After those reviews, a number of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have been published [ 31 43 ]. Therefore, our systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs of patients with CKD undergoing MDT is undertaken with the following aim: to quantitatively examine the impact of oral nutritional supplementation of energy or protein/amino acid versus routine care on nutritional status, electrolyte level, and clinical outcomes.…”

“…Oral protein supplementation (Otsuka Nutrition Pharmaceutical (ONCE) dialyze formula (ODF)) was found to increase the calorie and protein intake in hypoalbuminemic peritoneal dialysis patients [28]. Another study conducted by Sahathevan and colleagues in Malaysia found that oral protein supplementation was significantly associated with increased protein intake in an intervention group, and increased calorie intake in control groups [11]. Our study showed that calorie intake of patients in the three groups did not change significantly after three months of nutritional intervention.…”

“…In addition, it was summarized from 15 randomized clinical trials that the serum albumin level increased by energy, or protein/amino acid supplements in dialysis patients [33]. A study conducted on malnourished peritoneal patients by Sahathevan and colleagues in Malaysia showed that whey protein supplementation significantly increased total protein in both intervention groups, while it increased serum albumin in the control group [11]. In addition, another study conducted by Dong and colleagues in China found that higher daily protein intake in intervention group was associated with higher serum albumin in patients treated peritoneal dialysis [12].…”
