Aspiration Biopsy of the Spleen in Patients with Sarcoidosis

Abstract: Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the spleen was performed On IOI patients with suggested sarcoidosis; it was the final diagnosis In 79. Adequate specimens were obtained in all cases with a O.8x80 mm or O.7x40 mm disposable needle. Fine-needle biopsy specimens of the spleen showed a granulomatous reaction in 19 out of the 79 cases with sarcoidosis (24%). There were three minor biopsy complications that required no treatment.

“…Dysfunction of liver and spleen is uncommon, although evidence of liver and spleen involvement is frequently obtained at microscopic examination. Needle biopsy of the liver demonstrated granuloma in 24%-79%of patients (3,4) and similar studies in the spleen showed sarcoid lesions in 24%-59%of…”

“…6 The spleen is more frequently involved than the liver in systemic sarcoidosis. Splenic involvement is conrmed in 24 to 59z of patients by biopsy 7,8 and in 38 to 77z of patients by autopsy, 9 and one previous study showed splenic lesions in 69z of patients with hepatic sarcoidosis. 10 Hepatosplenic sarcoidosis most commonly manifests as organomegaly.…”

“…8 The most recent literature on this procedure comes from Europe. 2,4,[9][10][11] Although there are limited North American reports from the 1950s on utilization of sFNA for hematologic diseases and storage disorders, 12,13 the procedure has not gained much popularity. This paper reviews our experience with sFNA and splenic core biopsy (sCB) in 49 patients.…”
