Show more

“…Two highly adverse activities are currently affecting the mammalian community in the region: (1) deforestation for lumber, open pastures, and cultivation (except for the less fragmented areas of the Monumento Natural do Rio São Francisco), also observed by Silva et al (2013), and (2) subsistence hunting (a very common activity in the study region). Government-sponsored settlement projects (MDA 2004) have increased the population density in several areas, accelerating hunting and deforestation.…”

“…The area surrounding the MNGA has been altered by the presence of rural settlements, their livestock, and agricultural activities (SEMARH 2011, Silva et al 2013). This area may thus offer only limited resources for the local Cerdocyon thous population, which likely encounters more favourable conditions within the MNGA.…”

“…The predominant vegetation found within the MNGA is hyper-xerophylous deciduous forest, with three main types of habitat: arboreal-shrubby caatinga, grotas (humid gallery forest), and riparian forest. The caatinga vegetation is sparse and in secondary succession, but predominantly arboreal (Silva et al 2013). The grotas are forest fragments associated with intermittent, rocky-bedded streams that are filled with water at certain times of the year, and are characterised by more humid soil, which supports the development of denser vegetation (Dias et al 2002).…”

“…L.P.Queiroz (SILVA et al, unpublished data). The location has undergone a strong anthropic impact, with a history of fires, removal of timber, and livestock, such as cattle and horses (SILVA et al, 2013). After the creation and deployment of this protected area, in 2007, there was a decrease in these practices (SILVA et al, 2013).…”

After the creation and deployment of this protected area, in 2007, there was a decrease in these practices (SILVA et al, 2013). The region has an average altitude of 104 m, a mostly wavy soft relief, cut by narrow valleys with dissected slopes (SÁ et al, 2003) and non-calcic brown and litholic soils (JACOMINE et al, 1975).…”
