“…ILs, being less toxic cosolvents, are now employed as chemical cross-linkers for biomolecules. The development of biocompatible cross-linkers for biomaterials is a prerequisite as it facilitates the stability of the biomolecules, like proteins. In this context, MacFarlane and co-workers pioneered the introduction of Chn ILs as chemical cross-linkers for collagen. They successfully synthesized cholinium amino acid based ILs including cholinium lactate [Chn][Lac], cholinium levulinate [Chn][Lev], and cholinium tartarate [Chn][Tar] and used them as a replacement for the common cross-linking agent glutaraldehyde (GA) to reduce the toxicity of the collagen-based biomaterials.…”

“…In another pioneering work, Fathima and co-workers investigated whether cholinium acetate [Chn][Ac], [Chn][Cit], and cholinium sulfate [Chn][Sul] act as biocompatible cross-linkers for collagen. In this regard, a combination of transverse NMR relaxation and impedance measurements was employed along with conformational and thermal stability analysis.…”

“…The concentrations of ILs were varied from 12.5 to 100 mM. Before all the measurements, the samples were equilibrated for 30 provided in Table S1 in Supporting Information. To study the effect of pH of IL solution on protein, the solutions were prepared in distilled deionized and the pH was adjusted to 6.5 using dilute NaOH.…”

“…The authors observed that cholinium chloride [Chn][Cl] and dilute cholinium hexanoate ([Chn][Hex]) and cholinium aspartate ([Chn][Asp]) were successful in maintaining the conformational stability of avidin. Moreover, Tarannum et al have examined the effect of an aqueous solution of cholinium-based ILs on collagen. The data showed an increase in the melting and denaturation temperature of collagen as a function of the concentration of ILs thereby indicating stability and compactness in the structure of collagen .…”
