Antiulcerogenic activity of the extracts of Struthanthus marginatus

Abstract: Abstract:The gastroprotective action of the aqueous extract (AE) and the hydroalcoholic extract obtained from the leaves of Struthanthus marginatus (Desr.) Blume, Loranthaceae, were performed with in vivo models in rodents using: ethanol, indomethacin or stress-induced ulcers, determination of gastric secretion and the mucus production. The scavenger activity of AE in vitro was tested by the DPPH method. The treatment with the extracts (125-1000 mg/kg) significantly inhibited ulcerative lesions in comparison w… Show more

“…For example, the species Struthanthus marginatus (Desr.) Blume contains trace elements, including silicon, manganese, iron, copper, and zinc, which could explain its traditional use for wound healing (Freire et al, 2011;Leitão et al, 2013). In another work, rutin was extracted from Struthanthus subtilis Kujit and exhibited in vitro cytotoxic activity against human tumor cell lines (Cordero et al, 2003).…”

“…Meanwhile, dosedependent hypotension and cardiotoxic effects were reported for the methanol extract of leaves of Struthanthus venetus (Kunth) Blume (Lorenzana-Jiménez et al, 2006). Leaf extracts of S. marginatus exhibited in vivo protection against gastric lesions induced by ulcerogenic agents without any toxicity, which could justify its popular use for gastric disorders (Freire et al, 2011).…”

“…Studies have shown that gastric ulcer occurs in at least 10% of the world's population (Freire et al, 2011;Shimoyama et al, 2013). The etiology of disease is not completely understood, however it is known that the extent of injuries to the gastric mucosa depends on the balance between aggressive and protective factors (Banic´et al, 2011).…”

“…After 30 min, the animals were euthanized and their small intestines were removed. The distance traveled by the charcoal plug from the pylorus to the cecum was measured and expressed as a percentage of the total intestinal length (adapted from Freire et al, 2011).…”
