Antiulcer effect of the methanolic extract of Tamarindus indica seeds in different experimental models

Abstract: Background:Peptic ulcer is a global health problem of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by mucosal damage secondary to pepsin and gastric acid secretion which occurs due to due to an imbalance between offensive and defensive factors. Objective:The present study was carried out with methanolic extract of the seed coat of Tamarindus indica Linn. to evaluate its antiulcer potential on ibuprofen, alcohol and pyloric ligation induced gastric lesions.Materials and Methods:Doses of 100 mg/kg & 200 mg/kg of meth… Show more

“…Free and total acidity were estimated according to Srivastava et al ( 2010 ) and were expressed as mEq/L. Pepsin activity was measured according to the method of Kalra et al ( 2011 ) and was expressed as μg/mL. For histological assessment, the isolated stomachs were subjected to tissue processing and staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) for histopathological examination which were recorded with 100x lenses.…”

“…Tamarindus indica L. is a plant tree indigenous from the tropical Africa and America but also cultivated in several regions, such as China, India, Philippines and Spain. The methanolic extract of the seed coat of this plant (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) has been evaluated for determining their antiulcer potential on ibuprofen, alcohol and pyloric ligation-induced gastric lesions using albino Wistar rats [ 63 ]. The results of this study showed that the methanolic extract reduced total gastric juice volume and free and total gastric secretion acidity in pylorus ligation-induced ulcer model, while reduced ulcer index (comparable with ranitidine, 50 mg/kg, as control) [ 63 ].…”

“…In Recent Studies . The methanolic extract of the seed coat of T. indica at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly reduces the total volume of gastric juice and free and total acidity of gastric secretion in pylorus ligation induced ulcer model as compared to control [ 84 ].…”
