Antifungal activity of steroidal glycosides from Yucca gloriosa L.

Abstract: The antifungal activity of a crude steroidal glycoside extract from Yucca gloriosa flowers, named alexin, was investigated in vitro against a panel of human pathogenic fungi, yeasts as well as dermatophytes and filamentous species. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by an agar dilution method. Alexin had a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, found to reside entirely in the spirostanoid fraction. The major tigogenyl glycosides, yuccaloeside B and yuccaloeside C, exhibited MICs between … Show more

“…The antifungal activity of a crude extract from Yucca gloriosa L. (Agavaceae) flowers, named alexin, was investigated in vitro against a panel of human pathogenic fungi and yeasts, as well as dermatophytes and filamentous species. 47 Alexin had a broad spectrum of antifungal activity for all the tested yeast strains, except for Candida lusitaniae and Candida kefyr. It was also active against several clinical Candida isolates known to be resistant to the usual antifungal agents.…”

“…The methanol extract was concentrated and re-extracted with methanol and acetone (1:5, v/v; Yan et al 1996).The precipitate obtained was dried under vacuum, which turns to a whitish amorphous powder after complete drying. It was loaded on Merck silica gel-60 (230-400 mesh) column and eluted with chloroform-methanol-water (70:30:10; Favel et al 2005). The first fraction collected was air-dried at room temperature (28°C), and the residue obtained was treated as pure saponins of G. sylvestre.…”
