Antidiabetic Activity of Andrographis paniculata

Abstract: The hot water and ethanol extracts of Andrographis paniculata (local name Kalomegh) collected from Chittagong exhibited a significant hypoglycemic (blood glucose lowering) activity in both glucose-loaded and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of glucose (1.5 g/kg body weight) increased the blood sugar level while the intraperitonial (ip) administration of alloxan (40 mg/kg body weight) enhanced the blood sugar level much higher than that of the glucose-loaded rats. The hot water (0.8 g/kg b.w.)… Show more

“…Due to similarities in their therapeutic actions, Andrographis paniculata is suggested as a substitute for S. chirayita (Girach et al 1994). While their therapeutic actions may be similar, the main phytochemicals reported in Andrographis paniculata are kalmeghin; diterpes: andrographolide, andrographiside, neoandrographolide as well as panicolide, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and other polyphenolics (Li et al 2007;Hossain et al 2007). In our study, cinnamic acid along with chlorogenic acid and pcoumaric acid and their derivatives were present in both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Andrographis paniculata.…”

“…It is also used to relive gripping, irregular stools, loss of appetite, and as a febrifuge, tonic alternative and anthelmintic medicine (Sheeja et al 2006). Andrographis paniculata is also reported to show potential antidiabetic activity (Hossain et al 2007).…”

“…A. paniculata is a plant that possesses many medicinal values in treating several diseases and for health care maintenance. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] In this study, we investigated hepatoprotective effects of A. paniculata and its mechanism of action against CCl 4 induced oxidative damage in rats. Results obtained in the present study suggest that the aerial part of A. paniculata has antioxidant activity consistent with results of previous studies.…”

“…[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] It is used in folk medicine for treatment of infectious fever-causing diseases, colic pain, and liver disease. [11][12][13] Many studies have been carried out to investigate the biological and pharmacological effects of A. paniculata such as antimicrobial, 14 antifilarial, 15 antiangiogenic, 16 antidiabetic, 17,18 and antioxidant. 11,12,19 The active compounds of A. paniculata contain diterpene lactones, known as andrographolides.…”
