Antidepressants in Panic Disorders

Abstract: The efficacy of antidepressants for panic disorders has had major effects on our understanding of the classification, pathophysiology, and treatment of anxiety disorders. Psychiatric practice has also been significantly affected, but important issues remain unresolved, such as the mechanisms of therapeutic effect, optimal duration of therapy to minimise relapse, and the interaction and sequencing of medication with cognitive behavioural treatments.

“…Drug treatments that relieve anxiety and block panic can give the patient confidence to participate more fully in psychological therapy. Long-term follow-up is rare in medication studies and it has been estimated that 30-75% of patients relapse after drug treatment is discontinued 13. Psychological therapy is used to treat avoidance and reduce panic.…”
