“…Thus, the protective role of CQE in ECV304 cells is not only to maintain the balance between antioxidant enzymes and ROS but also to upregulate eNOS expression, leading to vascular relaxation. Inducible NOS was involved in not only gastric ulcer protection of C. quadrangularis methanol extract in aspirinadministered rats (Jainu and Devi, 2006) but also antiinflammatory activity of C. quadrangularis ethyl acetate extract in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells (Srisook et al, 2011). Oxidative damage from 4-hydroxynonenal, one of the most abundant products of lipid peroxidation, showed a significant attenuation in iNOS expression through NF-kB translocation in mouse pancreatic islet endothelial MS1 cells transfected with mGSTA4 (Yang et al, 2008).…”

“…The methanol extract also exhibited (Badami and Channabasavaraj, 2007) including gastric ulcer protection in aspirin-administered rats by decreasing microvascular permeability, plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin-1b including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity in gastric mucosa (Jainu and Devi, 2006). Additionally, ethyl acetate extract of C. quadrangularis possessed anti-inflammatory activity in lipopolysaccharidestimulated murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells by suppressing the translocation of nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) followed by downregulation of iNOS expression and nitric oxide production with induction of heme oxygenase-1 expression (Srisook et al, 2011). However, the precise mechanisms of ethanol extract of C. quadrangularis (CQE) in attenuating intracellular ROS on endothelial cells are largely unknown.…”

“…The extracts of C. quadrangularis stem showed anti-inflammatory properties [60][61][62] and were used in enhancing osteoblast proliferation, bone fracture healing, ossification of fetal bone and increasing the thickness of trabecular bone [63][64][65]. The exact molecular mechanism involved in C. quadrangularis-promoted osteogenesis is still to be elucidated, despite some mechanisms have been proposed.…”

“…Cissus quadrangularis has been studied in multiple settings and has been reported to have antioxidant, 16,17 antiobesity, 18 and anti-inflammatory [19][20][21] activity. The variation in functional activity may be explained by the wide array of active chemicals known to be found within the CQ plant (eg, polyphenols).…”
