Analysis of the prevalence and risk factors of osteoarthritis in a population

Abstract: The review contains data from large-scale foreign and Russian studies of the epidemiology of osteoarthritis (OA). It considers the role of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for OA, such as age, sex, hormonal status, obesity, etc. There are data on genetic susceptibility to OA and on congenital anomalies that contribute to joint structural changes. Data on the impact of racial and ethnic factors on the development and progression of OA are analyzed. The role of metabolic disorders in the pathogenesis o… Show more

“…Despite many research advances, the etiology and pathogenesis of OA are still unclear. The main causes of OA include age, obesity, genetics, endocrine and metabolic illnesses, inflammation, trauma, and the combined influence of various factors 13–15 . A deeper comprehension of the OA's pathogenic mechanisms will encourage the identification of new treatment targets to slow the disease progression (Figure 2).…”

In the Russian Federation, OA is diagnosed in about 4% of the adult population, most often − in subjects over 60 years of age, and in recent years there has been a trend towards an increase in incidence of disease among the adult population [4][5][6]. One of the most common location of the disease is the knee joint.…”
