Analysis of the HLA-ABC linkage disequilibrium: Decreasing strength of gametic association with increasing map distance

Abstract: 1242 HLA-ABC haplotypes of the North German population (Hambrug) as deduced by family analyses are described. They are in perfect agreement with recently published data by Mayr (1977) from Austria (Vienna) in all parameters tested: frequency of the single HLA-alleles, haplotype distribution and linkage disequilibrium values. Gametic association studies revealed that 69.4% of the B and C genes (map distance 0.2cM) 36.9% of the A and C genes (0.6 cM), but only 23.2% of the A and B genes (0.8 cM) were significant… Show more

“…N o correction for multiple testings has been made. The well known positive associations in Caucasian populations, notably between HLA-A1 and B8, A3 and B7, A2 and Bw44 (old nomenclature A 2 , B12), and between A2 and B15 (Degos & Dausset 1974, Hiller et al 1978, Mayr 1577, and Svejgaard et al 1971 are also found in this material.…”

“…An increase in frequency of an A locus antigen in psoriasis is of special interest when considered along with the Dundee findings of a highly significant increase in A 1 -B17 associations. There is some evidence of linkage disequilibrium between A1 and B17 in the general population (Mayr 1977, Hiller et al 1978.…”

“…The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region, during vertebrate evolution, is paralleled within the species level by a striking conservation of certain allelic constellations, gametic associations and linkage disequilibrium (Hiller et al, 1978;Hedrick et al, 1991). Several studies have shown that gametic selection of specific haplotypes can occur (Lindbloom et al, 1972), and that some haplotypes occur more often than expected when compared with the frequency of the corresponding antigens (Svejgaard et al, 1970).…”
