A population sample of 5,202 persons comprising normal, healthy individuals from three laboratories in Copenhagen was used for estimating HLA-A, -B antigen, gene, and haplotype frequencies, besides delta-values and their standard errors. The serum panels used allowed the determination of a total of 273 HLA-A, --B haplotypes, and the most significant A-values were in agreement with those found in other Caucasian populations. The methods used for the calculations of frequencies, delta-values, and standard errors are described.

Sixty‐one patients in the Dundee area suffering from psoriasis were typed for HLA—A and HLA—B antigens. On the basis of the typing results, the patients were divided into three groups, and studied with respect to sex, age of onset and familial incidence of the disease. The frequency of HLA—A1 appeared to be increased and HLA—B7 decreased but HLA—B13 and HLA—B17 were highly significantly increased (P < 10−6 and P < 10−10 respectively) in the psoriatic group compared to 204 controls. Of particular interest was a highly significant association of HLA—A1 with HLA—B17 in psoriatic patients. Family studies showed HLA—B17 to be a useful genetic marker for psoriasis in the families of B17 positive patients. Considerations of age of onset, familial incidence and typing data suggest that there is heterogeneity of genetic susceptibility to psoriasis and that one probable mechanism is the dominant inheritance of a “disease allele” in linkage disequilibrium with the allele coding for HLA—B17.

Forty-seven alleles of class I HLA-AB loci (14 for locus A and 33 for locus B) were identified in 787 participants in two groups of unrelated families. Group I included parents and children typed for bone marrow transplantation. Group II included families typed for renal transplantation. Before statistical evaluation, the A locus alleles were grouped into eight classes according to broad specificity, and the B locus alleles were grouped according to HLA epitopes into two classes. Significant differences in HLA-AB haplotype frequencies were found between male and female offspring. When families with children of both sexes were analysed, the frequencies of maternally inherited HLA-AB haplotypes were found to be significantly different in brothers and sisters. The results suggest the possibility that the transmission of specific AB haplotypes from mother to offspring may be correlated to children's sex. The major histocompatibility complex has been shown to be involved in the expression of H-Y male-specific minor histocompatibility antigens. The possible selection in the transmission of specific maternal HLA-AB haplotypes to male offspring may contribute to the avoidance of maternal cytotoxic reactions toward the male foetus.
