Show more

“…This trend for heterosis estimates considering disease characters was also observed for specific combining ability estimates (28,27,31). On the other hand, for fruit quality attributes, a larger number of hybrids with the highest heterosis estimates were derived from crosses between the 'Solo' and 'Formosa' heterotic groups and within the 'Formosa' group (Table 1).…”

“…Similarly, as observed for morpho-agronomic characters (Marin et al 2006) and physiological quality of seeds (Martins et al 2009) in papaya, heterosis is a common effect for traits associated with resistance to papaya fungal diseases. Recently, Vivas et al (2012bVivas et al ( , 2013 pointed out that heterosis in papaya for resistance to black spot and to phoma spot may provide significant genetic gains, thereby contributing to the reduction of chemical control in the crop. It was possible to identify papaya hybrids with potential for reducing the incidence and severity of black spot and of phoma spot, especially the hybrids 'Americano' x 'São Mateus' and 'Americano' x 'Waimanalo'.…”

“…Although there are breeding work aimed at achieving phoma-spot-resistant cultivars (Vivas et al, 2010;2013a), there are no commercial varieties with complete or costeffective resistance (Vivas et al, 2010). In this way, there is a need to broaden the genetic basis of this crop as well as to intensify researches that focus on the genetic resistance of papaya to diseases in general.…”
