ABSTRACTGrowth regulators can influence the physiological quality of seeds as well as the activity of enzymes involved in germination. They may, further, present in their formulation micronutrients which act mainly as enzyme catalysts. In this research work, hybrid corn seeds of the cultivar GNZ 2004 and line Le 57 were treated with the following biostimulants and dosages: 1.Stimulate ® 12.5mL/kg of seed, 2.Cellerate ® 10,0mL/kg, 3.mixtue of Cellerate ® + Stimulate ® (10.0mL/kg + 12.5 mL/kg), 4.Booster ® 100 mL/20kg and 5.control. Soon after the treatment, the seeds were submitted to the tests of germination, accelerated ageing and cold and seedling emergence tests. In addition, mass of dry matter of seedlings, shoot and roots and the activities of the enzymes á-amylase, catalase, esterase and peroxidase were evaluated. In the biostimulant treated seeds, there were no improvements in the quality of seeds and under stressful conditions, the use of the biostimulants Stimulate ® +Cellerate ® and Cellerate ® reduced the physiological quality of corn seeds. Increased activity of the peroxidase enzyme was found in seeds treated with Stimulate ® , Cellerate ® and Stimulate ® +Cellerate ® . Increased activity of the enzyme esterase was observed in seeds treated with Stimulate ® + Cellerate ® pointing out phytotoxicity of them. Palavras-chave:Carica papaya L., índice de seleção, REML/BLUP Mixed model for combining selection in segregate progeny of papaya ABSTRACT Although Brazil stands out as a leading global producer of papaya still exists a small number of lines/hybrids available for its cultivation. To obtain new cultivars it is necessary to direct efforts towards the identification and selection of superior genotypes and broadening the genetic basis of the species. This study aimed to select lines between and within families in a segregating population of papaya for advancement of self pollination and backcross. Originally the backcross population aimed the introgression of the physiological disturb (Golden type) into the UENF/CALIMAN01 genitors. For this a selection index named IG2 was used supported in individual genotypic values obtained through mixed models by REML/BLUP. Analysis of results permitted selection of eight progenies and segregated for the trait "Golden Type": 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 18 and 12. The selected genotypes within each progeny showed higher values of gain and predicted average than the controls (JS12, SS72/12 and Golden) for the following characteristics: height of insertion of the first fruit, firmness of fruit and production. Twenty plants e selected with the characteristic "Golden Type" for the advancement of generation of selfing and backcross.
ABSTRACT. Diallel crossing methods provide information regarding the performance of genitors between themselves and their hybrid combinations. However, with a large number of parents, the number of hybrid combinations that can be obtained and evaluated become limited. One option regarding the number of parents involved is the adoption of circulant diallels. However, information is lacking regarding diallel analysis using mixed models. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the method of linear mixed models to estimate, for variable resistance to foliar fungal diseases, components of general and specific combining ability in a circulant table with different s values. Subsequently, 50 diallels were simulated for each s value, and the correlations and estimates of the combining abilities of the different diallel combinations were analyzed. The circulant diallel method using mixed modeling was effective in the classification of genitors regarding their combining abilities relative to the complete diallels. The numbers of crosses in which each genitor(s) will compose the circulant diallel and the estimated heritability affect the combining ability estimates. With three crosses per parent, it is possible to obtain good concordance (correlation above 0.8) between the combining ability estimates.
ABSTRACT Combining ability and heterosis for resistance to black-spot in papaya genotypes by diallel analysisDiallelic crosses were performed between eight papaya genotypes belonging to the 'Solo' and 'Formosa' heterotic groups (four belonging to each group). The 56 hybrid combinations (F1's and reciprocals) along with their parents were evaluated in a complete randomized block design for resistance to black spot disease, caused by Asperisporium caricae. The severity of black spot in leaves and fruits was quantified in two occasions, March and May 2010. When the genotype effect was significant, heterosis as well as general and specific combining ability were estimated from the severity data. The genotypes 'JS12-N', 'Sekati', 'Golden' and 'Sunrise Solo 72/12' displayed better general combining ability for both characteristics. Twelve hybrids displayed promising results for selection, with low values of specific combining ability for resistance to black spot leaves and fruits. The heterotic group did not affect hybrid performance or heterosis estimates. Heterosis in papaya for resistance to black spot may provide significant genetic gains from both inter-and intraheterotic crosses, and especially from hybridizations involving genotypes of the 'Solo' group.
Diallelic crosses were performed among eight papaya genotypes, belonging to 'Solo' and 'Formosa' heterotic groups, four from each one with aiming to indicate possible hybrid combinations that contribute to reducing the severity of powdery-mildew on leaf. The 56 hybrid combinations (F1's and reciprocals) along with their parents were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Powdery-mildew severity on leaves was measured in March and May 2010, respectively, at 11 and 13 months after planting. The general and specific combining ability were estimated from the severity data.
