An Empirical Analysis of the Coherence Between Fuzzy Rating Scale- and Likert Scale-Based Responses to Questionnaires

Abstract: In dealing with questionnaires concerning satisfaction, quality perception, attitude, judgement, etc., the fuzzy rating scale has been introduced as a flexible way to respond to questionnaires' items. Designs for this type of questionnaires are often based on Likert scales. This paper aims to examine three different real-life examples in which respondents have been allowed to doubly answer: in accordance with either a fuzzy rating scale or a Likert one. By considering a minimum distance-based criterion, each o… Show more

“…The research method was carried out using quantitative methods by processing data from questionnaires and interviews which were quantified by scoring [33]. Numerical data are still being collected which are then processed qualitatively with interpretation according to scoring, but there is also processing that is descriptive in nature and depends on the paradigm of the informant, therefore an appropriate technique is needed so that the data obtained is pithy and can be a good raw material for analysis [36,39]. The questionnaire presented was in the form of semi-closed questions, to provide space for the resource persons to express their opinions.…”

“…Many researchers have developed scales based on FSs theory and these scales have been implemented in various fields, for example, the service industry (Chou, Liu, Huang, Yih, & Han, 2011; Hu, Lee, & Yen, 2010), medical science (Li, 2013; Navarro, Wagner, Aickelin, Green, & Ashford, 2016), investment decisions (Massanet, Riera, Torrens, & Herrera‐Viedma, 2014), education system (Gil, Lubiano, de la Rosa de Sáa, & Sinova, 2015; Guajardo, Lopez, & Ruiz, 2015; Lubiano, de Saa, Montenegro, Sinova, & Gil, 2016; Lubiano, Salas, De Sáa, Montenegro, & Gil, 2017), and public administration (Marasini, Quatto, & Ripamonti, 2016). FSs theory also has been used effectively in a great variety of fields for modeling humans' feeling of words for product design (De La Rosa De Sáa et al, 2015; Shimizu & Jindo, 1995).…”
